Job Description
The Dean of Students (DoS) is responsible for overseeing all student support structures at HLA–Northrop. The Dean of Students will collaborate with staff, students and families to develop a school environment that is inclusive, relevant and engaging of all stakeholders to build a strong learning community. The Dean of Students will strive to ensure that all Hiawatha Academies scholars are empowered with the knowledge, character and leadership skills to graduate from college and serve the common good. The Dean of Students will work alongside the Campus Leadership Team, manage the Student Behavior Specialists, and under the guidance of the Principal.

Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
* Serve as a member of the Northrop Leadership Team
* Foster a school culture that promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents, and supports the school’s mission and equity vision
* Build effective relationships among teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture
Student Support
* Implement and manage all support structures for struggling students to ensure student success in meeting academic and/or behavioral expectations
* Collaborate with teachers, social worker, school psychologist, and students who have exceptional behavior and/or social-emotional health needs
* Plan and conduct mental health group and individual sessions to address social, emotional, and behavioral needs
* Refer students to health services, counseling or psychological services, and Child Protection Services when necessary
Student Culture and Discipline
* With school leadership support, refine, lead and uphold HLA-N’s culture and instructional framework that aligns with the Hiawatha Academies’ mission
* Manage systems, data and communication surrounding logical consequences at HLA—Northrop, and support teachers in implementing these consequences
* With Principal support, manage, evaluate and develop a team of teachers focused on all issues related to classroom management and school culture to ensure alignment of staff to school mission and vision
* Coach and support staff as they implement plans to build strong, student-centered classroom culture
Team Management
* Coach student behavior specialists and paraeducators to build strong relationships with students
* Coach and support teachers in building full participation in all learning environments
* Serve as a member of the Student Support Team, which will be comprised of the school social worker, Special Education Coordinator, and Special Education and/or ELD teacher(s)
Perform other duties as required and assigned
The Dean of Students must demonstrate knowledge of and support Hiawatha Academies’ mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

Hiawatha Employment Logistics
* Hiawatha Leadership Academy – Northrop scholars’ school day is from 7:10-3:15 pm, Monday-Thursday and 7:210 am-1:15 pm on Friday.
* Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 1:40-3:15pm.
* All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all Family Events at the school.
Skills & Qualifications
Required:
* Bachelor’s Degree
* A minimum of 3 years of experience working with students of color or students growing up in low-income households
* Previous teaching and/or relevant leadership experience
* Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with colleagues and with students
* Self-starter and ability to proactively identify solutions
* Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making
Highly Preferred:
* Experience serving as a Dean of Students, Dean of Discipline, or other administrative role
* Experience and/or coursework in Social Work/Psychology/Counseling
* Training in behavioral management techniques
* Experience working with Multilingual, Spanish fluency
