Position Title:  Lead Special Education Teacher (K-4)
Department/Building:  Riverside Elementary School (High Needs School)
Reports to: Building Principal, Jill Bjorge
Assignment: 2025-2026 School Year - Ongoing
Hours: 8 per day, Monday through Friday 
Duty Days:  184 plus extra 9 days
Salary Range:  $ 46,936 - $ 90,238  (Based on education and experience; wages outlined in the Certified Master Contract located on 
district website)
Union:  Ed MN 
FLSA:  Overtime Exempt
BENEFITS:   Health, Dental, Vision, Life, LTD, TRA, 403b and PTO/ESST 


Lead Special Education Teacher Role and Responsibilities 

Summary: A Special Education Lead Teacher plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities and ensuring they receive the appropriate resources and accommodations for academic success. 

Essential job responsibilities (all positions):

  1. Lead the creation, development, and implementation of evaluations and IEPs for students with disabilities.

  2. Work collaboratively with parents, general education teachers, counselors, and specialists to ensure the IEPs meet the students'' specific needs.

  3. Lead and coordinate special education team meetings, including collaborating with other educators, administrators, educational assistants, and outside specialists.

  4. Train and mentor new special education teachers (or veteran teachers using new or different to them curriculum) on instructional practices, curriculum resources, and classroom management for supporting students with disabilities

  5. Stay informed and compliant with special education laws, such as IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

  6. Ensure proper documentation and timelines for IEPs, assessments, and meetings.

  7. Coordinate the use of special education resources, such as adaptive technologies, teaching assistants, and external services.

Overall, a Special Education Lead Teacher must be both a teacher and a coordinator, leading the efforts to ensure students with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed in school.

Site-based job responsibilities: (these duties are dependent on school site and are provided here as guidelines but are not inclusive of all responsibilities).

  1. Coordinates services, communication, program structure and relations among staff, and parents regarding special education students.

  2. Monitors all student records. 

  3. Provides for student intake, and for due process information to staff. 

  4. Manages crisis situations, and consults about behavior interventions. 

  5. Administers student testing, as appropriate. 

  6. Act as a District Representative at IEP Meetings

  7. Schedule and facilitate child study team meetings and departmental meetings

  8. Attend crisis meetings

  9. Coordinate Transitions

  10. Manage caseload assignments

  11. Assist with special education transportation issues, as needed

  12. Supervise, manage and schedule paraprofessionals in conjunction with Building Principal

  13. Manage Parent Requests for Evaluation (schedule pre-evaluation meetings with parent, school psychologist, counselor and lead special education teacher): set up Initial paperwork

  14. MCA/MTAS coordination; scheduling and organization 

  15. Maintain resources for modifications and accommodations of students to be accessed by general education teachers

  16. Provide training''s as needed (SPED Forms, Due Process)

  17. All other duties as assigned by administrator that is commensurate with program coordination and building needs
