Position Title: Building Substitute Teacher Salary Range: $44,150.00 - $60,941.46 Reports To: Instructional Leader Status: Exempt, Full-Time 40+ hours a week Contract Type: 10 month contract ABOUT THIS ROLE At HOPE, consistency matters. The Building Substitute is not a placeholder ? they are a vital and permanent member of the HOPE community. Unlike a traditional substitute who arrives as a stranger, our Building Substitute is a familiar face to scholars, families, and staff. They are the person we trust to step into any classroom, any grade level, and any situation with confidence, warmth, and the same high standards we expect from our permanent staff. This role directly supports HOPE''s Radical Growth and Workforce Culture strategic priorities ? because academic momentum does not pause when a teacher is absent, and our scholars deserve instruction that is purposeful and consistent every single day. The ideal Building Substitute is adaptable, reliable, and genuinely energized by working with young people across different grade levels and settings. This person is present, engaged, and fully committed to HOPE''s mission ? not just filling a seat, but actively holding the standard until their colleague returns. The Building Substitute Teacher must be prepared to transition between short-term and long-term responsibilities based on evolving school needs. Flexibility, adaptability, and commitment to student success are essential. Core Responsibilities Instructional Planning & Delivery Short-Term Assignments (1-5 days): Execute lesson plans left by the regular teacher with fidelity and maintain instructional momentum Follow established classroom routines and schedules precisely Complete detailed feedback forms regarding lesson completion and student engagement Long-Term Assignments (6+ days): Develop comprehensive lesson plans aligned with school curriculum standards and learning objectives Create and implement assessments to measure student progress Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and ability levels Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance learning Collaborate with grade-level teams to ensure alignment with pacing guides Classroom Management & Student Behavior Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and culturally responsive learning environment Implement and enforce classroom rules, procedures, and behavioral expectations consistently Utilize the school''s discipline policies and behavioral management systems Address behavioral issues using proactive strategies; document and report significant incidents Implement individualized behavior plans for students with special needs Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and non-instructional periods Maintain a safe and secure learning environment at all times Professional Development & School Engagement Attend mandatory staff development programs, training sessions, and curriculum meetings Engage in professional learning to improve instructional practices Maintain professional licensure requirements and continuing education Participate in school-wide events, assemblies, and extracurricular activities Support school initiatives related to Hmong language and culture Serve as a positive role model demonstrating professionalism and core values Attend family engagement events during long-term assignments Special Responsibilities Emergency & Safety: Know and implement all emergency protocols (fire drills, lockdowns, severe weather) Maintain knowledge of student emergency information and ensure student safety Supervision & Coverage: Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess as assigned Accompany classes on field trips as needed Provide coverage for other teachers when requested Technology: Utilize learning management systems, student information systems, and communication platforms Operate classroom technology including interactive whiteboards, projectors, and tablets Troubleshoot basic technology issues and report problems promptly Flexibility: Adapt quickly to changing assignments across K-12 grade levels Accept day-to-day placement in various classrooms as needed Transition seamlessly between short-term and long-term assignments Respond to urgent staffing needs with professionalism Perform other duties as assigned by Principal or administrative staff Assignment Duration Summary Short-Term (1-5 days): Focus on continuity of instruction, following existing plans, maintaining routines, and providing feedback to the regular teacher. Long-Term (6+ days to full year): Assume full responsibilities of the classroom teacher including planning, assessment, grading, parent communication, professional collaboration, and participation in all school duties. Working Environment Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-level building that has an elevator and is accessible Position requires extensive interaction with children of all ages Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips away from school Duties may occasionally be performed in outdoor environments, such as athletic fields or playgrounds Duties may occasionally be performed in varying weather conditions, such as hot or cold weather. Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; children speaking or laughing loudly). Core Responsibilities

 

Instructional Planning & Delivery

Short-Term Assignments (1-5 days):

  • Execute lesson plans left by the regular teacher with fidelity and maintain instructional momentum
  • Follow established classroom routines and schedules precisely
  • Complete detailed feedback forms regarding lesson completion and student engagement

Long-Term Assignments (6+ days):

  • Develop comprehensive lesson plans aligned with school curriculum standards and learning objectives
  • Create and implement assessments to measure student progress
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and ability levels
  • Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance learning
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams to ensure alignment with pacing guides

Classroom Management & Student Behavior

  • Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and culturally responsive learning environment
  • Implement and enforce classroom rules, procedures, and behavioral expectations consistently
  • Utilize the school''s discipline policies and behavioral management systems
  • Address behavioral issues using proactive strategies; document and report significant incidents
  • Implement individualized behavior plans for students with special needs
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and non-instructional periods
