School Nurse (20 hours/week) - Indigo Education

POSITION SUMMARY As a member of the Indigo Education team, the School Nurse will support student specific health related needs through assessments, treatment, and implementation of preventative healthcare services at client schools. The School Nurse will work at multiple campuses and will be responsible for maintaining consistent services and legal compliance at each location. Currently, the majority of Indigo Education&#8217;s clients are charter schools. Individuals successful in this role are ethical, organized, and exhibit the ability to work independently and within a group structure. Indigo Education seeks candidates who are highly motivated and demonstrate the initiative necessary to improve special education programming for students with special needs throughout Minnesota and the teachers and staff who work with them. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The essential functions of a School Nurse include, but are not limited to the following: &#8226; Manage individual student care though regular assessments/evaluations and administering appropriate treatment if needed &#8226; Collaborate with staff to ensure all school-based medical requirements are met &#8226; Develop and maintain first aid system for each client school &#8226; Annually review immunization status of students and report situations when immunizations are not in compliance to local health office (Minnesota Statute 121A.15) &#8226; Provide families with referrals to healthcare providers when necessary &#8226; Administer medications orally or through injections if needed &#8226; Participate on Individual Education Plan (IEP) team for students receiving special education services &#8226; Develop and implement Individual Health Plan (IHP) and Emergency Health Plan (EHP) for students requiring accommodations &#8226; Report any communicable diseases suspected in school community to local public health office (Minnesota Code of Agency 4605.7000) and assist in control and prevention of diseases &#8226; Conduct vision and hearing exams as well as physical examinations and other preventative health services &#8226; Case manage school-based care of students with chronic conditions &#8226; Maintain all documentation required by individual student&#8217;s Pupil Health Record (PHR) (Minnesota Statute 144.29) &#8226; Ensure confidentiality of student health information &#8226; Promote positive, health-conscious environment for students, staff, and families at each client school &#8226; Perform other duties as assigned In addition to the duties above, the school nurse will act as a mandated reporter who will document and report any suspicions of child abuse (physical and/or emotional), sexual abuse, and neglect (Minnesota Statute 626.556) *Duties and responsibilities derived from the National Association of School Nurses at nasn.org<http://nasn.org> and the School Nurse Organization of Minnesota at minnesotaschoolnurses.org<http://minnesotaschoolnurses.org>. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Indigo Education employs School Nurses with the following characteristics and abilities: * Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and respond to needs across multiple settings * Exhibit the ability to work both independently and within a group structure * Resolve conflict with keen problem solving skills * Maintain a professional demeanor in difficult and / or emotional situations * Appreciate diversity and strive for cultural competency * Respect school choice options * Articulate the rationale for assessments and their intended purpose, results, and implications * Demonstrate knowledge of Minnesota due process procedures and disability criteria * Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills School Nurses at Indigo Education meet the following minimum qualifications: * Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Nursing * License as a Public School Nurse from Minnesota Department of Education * License as a Registered Nurse from Minnesota Board of Nursing * Public Health Certification from Minnesota Board of Nursing * Current CPR and First Aid certifications PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an Indigo Education employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
