Job Description: American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor Course: Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) Classification: Summer Instructor Revision Date: December, 2017 Salary and Benefits Compensation: $30 per hour, with 1 hour of prep allocated for every 4 hours of instruction. No benefits offered for short-term contracted summer instructors. General Responsibilities of Catholic School Employment: Employment in and by a Catholic school is substantially different from secular employment. Catholic school employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the school. An employee&#8217;s behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese, so as to embarrass the school or give rise to scandal. It is preferred that all employees be active, participating members of a faith community. Course Duration * Session 1: June 11 through July 12 (except July 4): 12:30pm - 2:00pm (5 weeks - M-Th) * Session 2: July 16 through August 16: 12:30pm - 2:00pm (5 weeks - M-Th) Under the direction of the Dean of Aligned Learning, primary objectives include: * Hill-Murray School will be offering two 5 week sessions of Introduction to ASL over the summer of 2018. It is preferable that hired instructor is available to teach both of these sessions, but it is not required. * Classroom curriculum and instructional materials will be provided by instructor. * Provide a fun learning environment that encourages both individual, partner, and group participation activities. * Introduce students to online resources that will allow them to learn more through independent study, and connect with other students/community interested in expanding ASL skills. * This course should provide students with a basic understanding of key ASL concepts and provide a basis for future study. Curriculum should cover a diversity of topics, including: * Deaf / Hard of Hearing culture * Understand the ASL alphabet / Fingerspelling * Number signs / Colors / Animals / Time / Food and Drink * Key Verbs and Nouns * Feelings and Emotions * ASL sentence structure * Other content as provided by instructor Qualifications: * Candidates must have at least 3 years of classroom teaching experience in a middle school or high school environment, including 2 years dedicated as an ASL instructor. * American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Certification a plus * Candidates may be asked to attend one night of Virtus training (provided by the building).
