Position: Elementary Special Education Coordinator FTE: 1.0 Great River School, an Urban Montessori learning environment, prepares students for their unique roles as responsible and engaged citizens of the world. Primary Role: Facilitate shared agreements among the program and turn those agreements into clear expectations and practice among the programs of the school. The Elementary Special Education Coordinator supports the work of the elementary teachers, and reports to the District Special Education Coordinator and Head of School on specific needs and management needs. Nature of Work: Under the direction of the District Special Education Coordinator, the Elementary Special Education Coordinator is responsible for creating an educational atmosphere in which all adults and students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential in a setting which fosters learning and personal growth. Specifically, the Elementary Special Education Coordinator focuses on facilitating clear communication and expectations among all Elementary Special Education personnel at the school. Leadership of the Elementary Special Education department is carried out by the coordinator as a role of convener, facilitator, and designer of systems, program organization, and communication tools. The Elementary Special Education Coordinator collaborates with the Elementary Program Director to create a dynamic and respectful environment in the Great River School elementary program for all students. Example of Duties: * Coordinate the maintenance of special education due process files in compliance with state and federal guidelines. * Identify the most aligned professional growth activities for the elementary Special Education department related to personal and school/program related mission and goals. Facilitate a shared mission for the Elementary Special Education department, including role of the teacher and role of the EA * In collaboration with the District Special Education Coordinator, design sustainable systems to maintain accurate and complete records of/for student IEP needs and services (including due process issues, withdrawals, etc.); role of the Teacher at each respective level; protocols for collaboration with General Education teachers; and other duties assigned by Head of School (or designee). * Point of contact/training for Sped Forms. * Present information on programs, services, regulations, etc. for the purpose of serving as a resource to other school personnel, the Board and Head of School. * In collaboration with the Elementary Program Coordinator, serve as district representative in due process meetings, assure coordination of child study teams, related services needs and assessments. * Model and implement restorative justice approach to conflict. * Attend staff meetings, and serve on school committees as required. * Assure due process compliance by planning for and meeting deadlines regarding IEP development, evaluation process, and progress reporting. * Facilitate team meetings which result in departmental agreements and alignment about approaches and strategies within due process. * Advise/oversee special education teachers in completion of IEP, evaluation and progress reports. * Review all IEPs and evaluations before they are sent home. * Collaborates with Special Education Director and District Special Education Coordinator in developing and delivering &#8220;New Staff&#8221; orientations. * Collaborates with Head of School, Special Education Director and District Special Education Coordinator on yearly staff reviews (Sped Guides & Educational Assistants) * Support the collaboration between Upper Elementary Special Education Guides and Lower Adolescent Special Education Guides in the transition of 6th grade students into 7th grade. * Collaborate with the District Special Education Coordinator, Elementary Program Coordinator and elementary special education guides to develop Educational Assistants schedules: Time, location, what students, what does each student need during that time, etc. * Other duties identified and assigned by Head of School Knowledge, Ability and Skills Required: - Knowledge of laws, regulations and practices of special education. - Ability to plan and organize work - Ability to facilitate conversations and establish shared agreements among a team of teachers, Education Assistants, and department-wide as a program. - Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills - Excellent problem solving skills that include multiple perspectives - Demonstrated interest & ability to design long-term solutions and systems - Respond promptly to a variety of stakeholder requests - Appreciate diversity and strive for cultural competency - Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and respond to needs across multiple settings - Exhibit the ability to work both independently and within a group structure Minimum Qualifications: - Minnesota teaching license in special education, or equivalent licensure in specialist services (OT, SLP, etc) - six years of teaching students with disabilities - Two years working as a Special Education administrator - Knowledge and understanding of Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards, learning theory and practice, curriculum, interventions and programming - Deep understanding of the goals of the school as a public Montessori program -willingness to attend Montessori training and workshops in order to integrate understanding in serving students in a Public Montessori program.
