RESPONSIBILITIES When you teach at MPS, leading effective lessons in class is just the beginning. You&#8217;ll collaborate with other passionate educators, customize your instruction to engage students of all different abilities, find ways to both challenge and encourage young minds, and create an environment where children feel safe and respected. Function: To provide a structured program of services to all students and the school community that integrates comprehensive school counselor program principles into the total school curriculum. The school counselor promotes and enhances the student learning process while addressing student needs in the academic, career and social/emotional domains. It is the expectation that Minneapolis Public Schools&#8217; School Counselors will provide services to students in the domains of Social/Emotional, Academic, and Career Development. Qualifications: 1. A valid Minnesota School Counselor License. 2. Evidence of knowledge of Comprehensive School Counseling Practices. 3. Evidence of continuous professional growth in counseling and guidance. Essential Functions: School counselors address the academic and developmental needs of all students, not just those in need, by collaborating with students, parents and/or guardians, school staff and the community. School counselors utilize the American School Counselor (ASCA) framework to provide comprehensive school counseling programming. MPS counselor essential functions also include: Academic Counseling: Assist students in planning an educational program that will fit their educational abilities and aptitudes. Provide support for students as needed on time management and organizational issues. Provide transition support to students, staff, and families. Meet with students regarding developmental transitions (elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and/or high school to postsecondary options.) Educate newly enrolled students and families about academic program and expectations of our schools. Help students and families with academic planning based on student goals. Work with families and students regarding academic progress and refer students to academic support within the building or community as needed. Engage family partnerships to provide equitable counseling services. Conduct informational meetings for parents focusing on comprehensive school counseling programming. Coordination and implement academic activities into school counselor curriculum Consult with staff and administration about course options and school wide curriculum Coordinate, administer and interpret guidance assessment instruments that enhance the academic and career planning of each student Career Counseling: Coordinate and implement developmentally appropriate career counseling activities into school curriculum. Coordinate delivery of the My Life Plan, postsecondary planning curriculum through Naviance. Provide students with learning, personality, and interest inventories to assist with future planning and personal awareness Advise and assist students in developing a postsecondary educational plan and creating career goals Consult with staff regarding summer enrichment, employment and internship opportunities related to student interests and educational goals Social/Emotional Counseling: Teach classroom lessons on social/emotional topics that may include conflict management, bully prevention, cultural awareness, teamwork, LGBTQ inclusion, abuse prevention, and stress management. Facilitate small groups or individual sessions with students regarding personal issues, social interactions, and emotional concerns. Refer students to outside mental health specialists when he or she is experiencing mental health issues. Coordinate and implement activities that facilitate transition between levels and grades. Provide individual counseling to students in need of immediate personal crisis management. Consult with teams and families about student personal/social strengths and needs. Communicate and consult with other student support services e.g. social workers regarding student related personal concerns. Meet with newly enrolled students and families about transitioning into our schools. Work with administrators and support staff on building crisis intervention plan. Other Responsibilities: Attend monthly district counselor/staff development meetings. Perform other related function commensurate with the demographic, professional, technical, legal and resource environment of both the school and district. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: School environment; may involve lifting up to 40 pounds; and the ability to sit, walk, and/or stand for extended periods of time, both indoors and outdoors.
