Job Description Special Education Teachers at Hiawatha Leadership Academy - Northrop are collaborative members of Student Support Team, working closely with other Special Education Teachers, Paraprofessional educators, School Social Workers, and related Service Providers at the campus and network level. Special Education teachers are also members of the grade level planning team for the grade level which they support. Special Education Teachers are responsible for nurturing social-emotional and academic growth through case management and by providing direct, differentiated instruction for students with identified needs. Special Education teachers are also instructional leaders in the school and collaborate with general education teachers to ensure a continuum of instructional services for students which may include co-teaching and/or resource room support. The ideal candidate for this role is a dedicated educator with a passion for equity and is committed to helping ensure all students get what they need so they can learn in a safe, structured, and productive learning environment. Planning, Instruction and Case Management


  • Write, implement, and track the goals for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Assist in the initial and three year re-evaluation of students to determine qualification and need for special education services including conducting achievements testing, data collection, observations, interviews, and functional behavior assessments
  • Provide direct academic and behavioral instruction and support for students with identified learning needs in the general education classroom
  • Provide individual and group instruction in reading, math, and/or writing 
  • Provide individual and group support for social/emotional skills
  • Work closely with other members of the Special Education and Student Support Team and general education staff to ensure high quality service is being provided for all students

Hiawatha Employment Logistic

  • Hiawatha Leadership Academy – Northrop students’ school day is from 7:25am-3:00pm, Monday-Thursday and 7:25am-1:15pm on Friday.
  • Staff must be present from 7:00am-3:15pm, Monday-Friday.
  • Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 1:30pm-3:15pm.
  • All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all Family Events at the school, including evening events throughout the year.



Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minnesota Special Education teaching license or currently enrolled in classes to pursue licensure
