Job Description The Special Education Teacher is responsible for supporting the academic and behavioral needs of HCP-N scholars who receive special education services and who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Special Education Teacher will work alongside fellow Special Education Teachers and Paraeducators, the Dean of Students and student culture team, the Social Worker, and under the guidance of Dean of Specialized Instruction. Responsibilities Behavior and Academic Development &#183; Utilize research-based best practices to create long-term and daily lesson plans to teach pro-social skills to scholars with identified ASD and other diagnosed support needs o Provide individual and group instruction in academic and pro-social skills for students with special needs o Provide individual and group support for social/emotional skill development &#183; Develop and implement behavior plans for scholars with ASD &#183; Train HCP-N staff to implement individual behavior plans and interventions; monitor and provide feedback to staff re: effectiveness of behavior plan implementation. &#183; Collaborate with classroom teachers and co-teach academic and social-emotional content as assigned &#183; Use data to adjust short- and long-term plans in order to meet students&#8217; learning and behavioral development needs &#183; Support the general education staff with implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) &#183; Ensure scholars are meeting academic goals and goals identified in Individualized Education Plans &#183; Ensure that all relevant school personnel have up-to-date information on appropriate modifications and accommodations for all students in order to ensure their academic and social needs are being met in the classroom. Special Education Responsibilities &#183; Write, implement, and track the goals for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) &#183; Serve as the case manager for a group of students receiving special education services &#183; Work closely with other members of the Special Education Team (teachers, social worker, paraprofessionals, administration) and general education staff to ensure high quality, compliant service is being provided for identified students &#183; Assist in the initial and three year re-evaluation of students to determine qualification and need for special education services including conducting achievements testing, data collection, observations, interviews, and completing functional behavior assessments &#183; Coordinate IEP meetings, monitor and comply with all paperwork and service deadlines. &#183; Coordinate and participate on the Child Study Team by attending meetings and supporting with the implementation of interventions to meet the needs of struggling learners with or without special education needs &#183; Maintain compliant special education records School and Classroom Culture &#183; Establish and maintain relationships with students and families based on trust and regular communication; collaborate and communicate regularly with families about academic progress and behavior &#183; Establish and maintain high expectations and routines for academic work and classroom behavior &#183; Establish and reinforce expectations and accountability structures to maintain a positive, focused classroom Additional Responsibilities &#183; Collaborate with colleagues and seek feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement &#183; Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and student achievement; reflect on instructional practices to meet individual professional development goals &#183; Actively participate in professional development, grade level, and community meetings &#183; Maintain accurate records, grade book, and data tracking systems &#183; Actively attend to supervision duties and contribute positively to a collaborative school environment Perform other duties as required and assigned The Special Education Teacher must demonstrate knowledge of and support Hiawatha Academies&#8217; mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior. Hiawatha Employment Logistics &#183; HCP-N scholars&#8217; school day is from 7:10 am-3:00 pm, Monday-Thursday and 7:10 am-1:15 pm on Friday. &#183; Staff must be present from 7:00 am-3:15 pm, Monday-Friday, or until all duties are completed for the next day. &#183; Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 1:45 pm-3:15 pm. &#183; All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all family events at the school. Job Description

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for supporting the academic and behavioral needs of HCP-N scholars who receive special education services and who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Special Education Teacher must demonstrate knowledge of and support Hiawatha Academies’ mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

 

Hiawatha Employment Logistics

·         HCP-N scholars’ school day is from 7:10 am-3:00 pm, Monday-Thursday and 7:10 am-1:15 pm on Friday.

·         Staff must be present from 7:00 am-3:15 pm, Monday-Friday, or until all duties are completed for the next day. 

·         Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 1:45 pm-3:15 pm.

·         All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all family events at the school.

Skills & Qualifications

 

Required: 

·         Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education with endorsement in ASD

·         Minnesota Special Education licensure

·         Knowledge of Special Education law and due process compliance

·         Knowledge of writing and implementing Standards-based IEPs

·         Knowledge of MN ASD criteria and the evaluation process including: conducting Functional Behavior Assessments; understanding the use of Positive Behavior Supports; knowledge of how to write a Behavior Intervention Plan

·         Training or willingness to be trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

·         Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with colleagues and families

·         An ability to learn quickly and adapt in the face of challenges

·         An ability to lead and to follow

·         Exercise excellent judgment in decision-making and a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality

·         A willingness to go above and beyond to do whatever it takes to ensure the highest level of service for our scholars

 

Highly preferred

·         A minimum of two years teaching experience working with students of color 

·         Bilingual or multilingual (Spanish and English preferred)
