Position: Special Education Coordinator Start Date: August 17, 2020 School Mission: The mission of Rochester Beacon Academy, with the cooperation of parents, is to provide a safe learning community in a secondary (6-12 grade) setting; respecting the individual and differentiated needs of learners, empowering them to reach their full potential and join their community with success. Position Purpose: Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the coordinator works to promote the inclusion of special education students within the education environment focusing on their individual needs and supporting teachers, paraprofessional staff and families. This position provides special education leadership and guidance to staff and families in a 6-12 setting. This includes, but is not limited to, attending IEP meetings, collaborating with leadership staff on special education issues, reviewing due process paperwork, and coordinating special education evaluations. Essential Functions: * Coordinates special education evaluations * Provides guidance and support to special education staff regarding due process paperwork * Assists staff with developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) * Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations and institutions * Coordinates with the Director of Special Education and/or Executive Director regarding special education issues * Serves as a resource to students, parents, and staff regarding special education services and needs * Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the education field by attending professional development, meetings, and/or training. * Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping * Encourages parental involvement in students&#8217; education and ensures effective communication with students and parents * Assists with new-teacher orientation and in-service trainings Additional Duties * Performs other tasks as assigned by the Director of Special Education and Executive Director Skills, Knowledge, Abilities * Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the education experience of students with special needs * Knowledge of differentiated instruction, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans * Knowledge of Federal and State Laws regarding special education * Ability to organize and coordinate work * Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents * Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth * Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others Educational Requirements: * Current Minnesota special education teaching license and a minimum of 3-5 years of special education experience * Prior special education teaching experience for 6-12th grade (Preferred) If interested, please send the following: 1.
