Position Begins: mid-August 2021 Status: Full-time, Exempt Department: Instructional Faculty, Upper School Position Description: Candidates will have strong academic training and expertise in the study of literature and demonstrated artistry in the teaching of writing (creative and analytical modes), as well as experience contributing to a high school program that creates an intentional curricular bridge between 9th and 12th grades in terms of process, content, and skills. Ideal candidates will bring a demonstrated commitment and expertise to teaching literature courses that center on themes within racial identity, as well as to integrating diverse texts within any course; we are particularly interested in identifying candidates whose upper-level electives offer a focus on discursive movements or themes in literature in order to accomplish this goal (the Harlem Renaissance, literature of migration, etc.). As importantly, we seek a candidate who has a track record of leveraging these passions into effective practices that encourage a community of adolescents to think creatively, engage ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity. Extending beyond literature and writing, the most successful candidates will approach their role as an advisor with a drive to better understand the whole-picture needs of their students and support a program where self-reflection, empathy, and flexibility are the goals. Requirements: BA degree required. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration and communication with both colleagues and students, are required. Candidates should support the mission of SPA, the vision of the Upper School, and be eager to join a professional community where openness to growth is the norm. How to Apply: The position includes a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, resume, statement of teaching philosophy, and a list of references.
