Title Position: Social Worker or School Counselor (Dependent on Licensure) FLSA Status: Dependent on Licensure 1. Reporting Relationship: The Social Worker reports to the Building Principal and is responsible to that person for the proper interpretation and performance of the duties and responsibilities of the position. 1. Basic Function of the Position: To assess and provide services to students and their families who are at risk for or determined to have social, emotional and physical problems that may be potentially handicapping, impacting student achievement. 1. Duties and Responsibilities of the Position: * Work with other disciplines within the district to provide the most appropriate services to identified students. * Participate in building-level Child Study Team. * Provide crisis prevention and intervention to students and families. * Serve as the district liaison to all students placed outside the District. * Function as Child Protection Coordinators for each building and the district; in-service staff on the reporting of child abuse and neglect, assist in the reporting of such incidents and keep accurate records of reported cases. * Provide current information about community resources which may be accessed by school personnel, families and students. * Facilitate support groups for students and parents. * Assist in planning and/or presenting in-service for regular and special education staff on a variety of topics. * Conduct classroom lessons for students on a variety of topics related to social work services and personal safety. * Conduct individual sessions with students and their families. * Address and process oral or written reports of offensive behavior/sexual harassment between students at the building level. Instruct and update staff and faculty regarding offensive behavior/sexual harassment policies and procedures. * Work with students and families regarding truancy issues including monitoring and reporting truancy violations as needed. * Conduct home visits as needed when paired with an appropriate school professional. * Serve as liaison between school and community resources. Collaboration and consultation with community agencies and other professionals. * Serves on building-level and district-level crisis teams. * Performs other duties as assigned by the administrator for effective school operation. 1. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. 1. Education and / or Experience: BA in Human Service related field. Master's Degree in School Social Work Preferred. 1. Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: Board of Social Work license and Board of Teaching license Preferred. 1. Language Skills: Effectively communicate with students, staff, administrators, parents and the community. The ability to listen and converse with diverse families.. Must be patient, tactful and considerate in discussing issues while maintaining confidentiality. 1. Math Skills: Basic Math Skills 1. Reasoning Ability: Know, interpret and follow school policy. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. Diffuse difficult situations. 1. Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrate ability to operate a computer and necessary software. Maintain professional composure while dealing with a variety of personalities and situations. Show initiative and function as a self-starter. Demonstrate positive and effective working relationships with students, staff, other administrators, parents and the community. Understanding of common child and adolescent mental disorders. 1. Physical Demands: Ability to sit for long periods of time and extended periods of keyboarding. Ability to perform the following actions occasionally: lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, reaching, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, and walking. 1. Work Environment: Collaborative work in a fast-paced environment interacting with students, staff, administrators, parents and the community with multiple requests and concerns.
