JOB DESCRIPTION Saint Thomas Academy employees advance the mission of the Academy by developing the intellectual, spiritual, moral and physical potential of each cadet, and by cultivating the practice of leadership so that each student has the skills and confidence to be a leader. Specifically, the school counselor will proactively oversee the mental health initiatives within the school and address individual student concerns as needed. REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES Direct Student Social, Emotional & Academic Support &#8226; Provide direct support service to individual students, small groups and classrooms. &#8226; Complete assessments, referrals and counseling with students and families. &#8226; Assist students in setting goals, decision making, peer relationships, coping strategies, effective social skills and conflict resolution skills. &#8226; Counsel individuals and small groups as needed; refer severe problems to appropriate community resources. &#8226; Coordinate with teachers to help identify students who are at risk or in crisis; act as a main point of contact for these students and families, communicating regularly with them. &#8226; Consult with other professional staff and outside agencies and other organizations. &#8226; Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students. &#8226; Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal law. &#8226; Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and assist with appropriate interventions. &#8226; Provide academic support, including organizational strategies, study skills, and test-taking strategies. School Programming & Classroom Support &#8226; Conduct professional development workshops on mental health topics. &#8226; Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers. &#8226; Utilize a variety of instructional techniques to meet the individual needs of students. Communication &#8226; Communicate with parents regularly and proactively regarding student progress. &#8226; Communicate with faculty and staff in their daily relationship with students. &#8226; Communicate regularly with the Director of Student Services and Middle School Director on matters of discipline, attendance, student chemical health, academic progress, and other issues as needed. &#8226; Communicate with school counselors and other administrators at Convent of the Visitation School as needed related to student concerns between schools. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES &#8226; Conduct professional development workshops on mental health topics. &#8226; Serve on STAt (Student, Teacher, Academic Team). &#8226; Assist with Chemical Health program. &#8226; Collaborate on grade level meetings each quarter. &#8226; Assist with standardized testing. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH &#8226; Participate in professional growth, in-services, workshops and staff development opportunities to improve knowledge of subject matter, maintain professional licensure and improve best practices. &#8226; Cooperate with administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs. &#8226; Attend faculty, department and committee meetings as required. JOB QUALIFICATIONS &#8226; Master&#8217;s Degree and licensure in school counseling. &#8226; Experience working with middle and/or high school students.
