I. Catholic School Principal – Church of Saint Peter, MN – John Ireland School (K-8)
II. Primary Purpose of this Position:
The Catholic School Principal provides educational leadership in a Catholic environment for all students by directing the professional teaching staff, facilities, and school marketing activities; communicates on an on-going basis with all constituents of the school; functions in all areas of education, promoting the directives of the parish and school mission statements, the various parish and school handbooks, the school curriculum and directives established by the pastor; represent the school as a member of the parish professional staff.
III. Church Employment Responsibilities:
* Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church and the Diocese of New Ulm. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church, such that can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. It is required that the employee filling this position be an active, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
IV. *HELP CREATE A PRODUCTIVE AND HARMONIOUS WORK ENVIRONMENT. Promote good morale, adequate communication, and cooperative teamwork.
* Regular School Activities (Included but not limited to)
1. Is present in the building at least 40 hours per week when school is in session, unless there are meetings and/or school obligations off school grounds. (Time may vary during summer months.)
2. Supervises the children before and after school and lunch periods;
3. Leads morning prayer with students and makes morning announcements;
4. Demonstrates effective, appropriate management skills;
5. Coordinates faith formation activities with students and colleagues including, but not limited to, liturgies, prayer services, daily prayer, and retreats; participates in these activities when appropriate;
6. Supervises students, faculty, and staff throughout the building and maintains appropriate conduct throughout the school;
7. Assures a positive, safe, and healthy learning and working environment is maintained;
8. Maintains open communications with staff, faculty, students, pastors, parish team, parents, applicable committees, and the larger community; Produces school newsletter and bulletin items, and social media posts as appropriate
9. Involves teachers and other appropriate groups in formulating policies and operational procedures;
10. Provides channels for constructive criticism in order to improve the quality of educational programs;
11. Collaborates with and maintains cooperative relations with local groups and local schools regarding school-related programs.
* Administrative Responsibilities:
1. Regularly reports to the pastor the concerns about the school, eg; enrollment, scholarships, budget, or faculty
2. Gives priority to fostering the faith community and faith development of students and staff;
3. Recognizes and supports the relationship between the school and the parents;
4. Assumes final responsibility for school discipline;
5. Recruits, interviews, and works with the pastor for hiring staff;
6. Provides adequate orientation and employee information for new school staff;
7. Oversees ongoing evaluations and position description reviews for staff that directly reports to the principal;
8. Establishes and implements ongoing professional growth and development programs for faculty;
9. Serves on, and attends, the education committee meetings, diocesan principals’ meetings, administrative meetings, and any other meetings as designated by the pastor;
10. Reports and recommends activities to the Area Faith Community Pastoral Council to assure that the goals and objectives that serve the Area Faith Community Mission are addressed.
11. Provides in-services for appropriate committees and its members;
12. Consults with appropriate representatives from various associations and committees to set meeting objectives and agendas;
13. Assists with developing and carrying out the education committee’s policies;
14. Participates and provides leadership for development and implementation of ongoing school strategic plan, working with the education committee along with the appropriate Administrative Council and Area Faith Community Pastoral Council;
15. Assists in developing and then following the approved annual budget;
16. Ensures lunch information us prepared and submitted to the state;
17. Oversees the Scrip program submitting orders and preparing for pickup;
18. Assures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and diocesan regulations;
19. Works at recruiting new students and assists others who may be responsible for marketing;
20. Oversees and carries out the implementation of the school crisis plan;
21. Provides for adequate management of records and reports;
22. Reviews and annually uses accreditation self-study tool in planning;
23. Promotes and supports fundraising and financial grant efforts, assisting as needed.
24. Attends school functions and participates as is appropriate;
25. Assists with providing feedback in regards to the proper maintenance for building and school grounds;
26. Reviews students quarterly report cards;
27. Maintains students’ records/report cards/portfolios (electronic and/or paper);
28. Oversees the scheduling and conducting of conferences throughout the year;
29. Utilizes financial and human resources to fully accomplish the goals of the school;
30. Oversees tuition payments, scholarships, and reminders;
31. Send notes of appreciation and other communications as needed;
32. Submit requests for text aid and health aid to district;
33. Communicates with the district regarding title services and students’ needs;
34. Reviews and prepares annual calendar;
35. Prepares and submits annual reports to the Diocese and MNSAA and other reports as requested;
36. Prepares student, family and faculty handbooks;
37. Follow Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.
* Professional Responsibilities:
1. Maintains professional licensure and knowledge base by acquiring 125 clock hours of professional development in a five-year period;
2. Work towards administrative licensure
3. Shares information from professional development opportunities with colleagues;
4. Attends in-service training workshops, conferences, and meetings as required;
5. Participates on curricular, extra-curricular, and instructional development committees;
6. Participates on Accreditation Teams/Self-Study Committees as needed;
7. Reinforces Catholic educational identity to school/parish/local committees;
8. Models behavior that is respectful, professional, and collegial;
9. Demonstrates professionalism.
* Attend Meetings
Attends all required meetings including principal meetings, education committee meetings, faculty
meetings, parent-teacher conferences, special education meetings, curriculum meetings, MNSAA and any other meetings deemed necessary by the pastor.
Complete other duties as needed for support of students, faculty, staff and volunteers.
V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
• Have a minimum of BA/BS degree in education or content area with pedagogy coursework and MS degree in an Education Related Program (or willingness to begin to attain immediately and complete within five years) and preferably an Administrative License;
• Hold current State of Minnesota Teaching License – Have and maintain appropriate credentials;
• Has appropriate educational experiences;
• Exhibits competence in age-appropriate instructional methods and knowledge of subject matter being taught;
• Implement change effectively and efficiently;
• Maintains good communication skills;
• Has proficiency in technology skills as the position demands, including but not limited to the Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word Excel, PowerPoint, and Interactive White boards;
• Possess good people and learning skills.
• Successfully complete standard Diocesan-required employee background check, BCA check, credit check, and motor vehicle check.
• Successfully complete VIRTUS training and maintain all Safe Environment Requirements of the Diocese of New Ulm and The Church of St. Peter

I. The school consists of K-8 grades, with currently ~ 100 students supported by the Teaching Staff and Volunteers – JPAC (John Ireland School Parent Advisory Council)
