Creating a safe social-emotional learning environment Job Summary The School Counselor is a critical member of the Community School of Excellence. The counselor will be responsible for providing support to the instructional process and addressing the social-emotional needs of the student body. The counselor&#8217;s role is that of a student advocate and helping students achieve academic, personal/social, and career successes. This position will act as a bridge between home and school. This position will report directly to the Education Leader. Responsibilities Counseling * Provide individual planning sessions to students in the areas of academic planning and success, career awareness, and social/emotional development in accordance with planned objectives for grade level * Conduct structured goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of groups of children. Themes include academic skill building, social skill development, career awareness, conflict resolution, family issues, and making healthy choices * Assist in the transition from Middle School to High School * Utilize data to make informed decisions Consulting * Provide information and skills to parents, school staff, administration and the community to assist them in helping students in academic, career and social development * Take a leadership role in the infusion of counseling content into the curriculum, staff development and parent education programs * Assist parents in addressing school-related problems and issues. Refer students and their parents, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs and/or outside agencies * Plan and coordinate programs such as career and college fairs, scholarships, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum Managing * Establish a planning calendar for activities * Articulate the school counseling program to students, parents, staff and community * Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development activities Professionalism * Adhere to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations * Adhere to preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations * Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal laws about school counseling * Demonstrate personal growth and professional development Other Duties * Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in school guidance and counseling, preferred Master's degree, an accredited college/university. * A valid Minnesota K-12 school counselor license * Bilingual in English and Hmong, Karen or Karenni preferred * Experience and aptitude working with young children * High level of patience and ability to calmly and redirect and guide young children * Demonstrated multi-cultural experience and ability to communicate with limited-English speakers * Demonstrates superior judgment in all aspects of work. * Ability to meet deadlines and hold oneself accountable for meeting deadlines. * Ability to multi-task and handle a high volume of interruptions * Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also being a strong team player. * Familiarity and comfort with electronic forms of communication, including ready access and responsiveness to e-mail correspondence. * Ability to sit for long periods of time and enter student and staff data accurately into Infinite Campus and for other state-required reports -- Community School of Excellence School District #4181, 270 Larpenteur Ave West, St. Paul, MN 55113 Please submit the following: 1.
