Hiawatha College Prep (HCP) is a results-driven middle school that is part of the growing Hiawatha Academies charter school network and we are committed to ensuring that 100 percent of its students will graduate from high school prepared to thrive in college.  


HCP is currently seeking a hard-working, passionate, goal-oriented educator to join our team as a 5-8 English Language Development (ELD) Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.


Job Description

Every HCP teacher has the opportunity to join a team of motivated, mission-driven teammates who are committed to taking responsibility for their students’ learning. HCP teachers are charged with providing a rigorous, fast-paced, and highly structured learning environment for their scholars.  Our core subjects include literature, writing, math, science, and humanities. The ELD teacher will deliver standards-based, differentiated instruction to our middle school scholars, and collaborate with a team of content teachers from that grade level to help support all scholars toward reaching grade-level mastery.


We are seeking an English Language Development (ELD) teacher who celebrates language diversity and is passionate about supporting the development of scholars’ academic language through research-based strategies.  The ELD Teacher will work under the direction of the Principal and in close collaboration with the Dean of Students, classroom teachers, and advisors.

Perform other duties as required and assigned

·         Teachers must demonstrate knowledge and support of Hiawatha Academies’ mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior

Support students with Identified Language Development Needs

·         Coordinate pull-out services and in-class support

·         Provide direct instruction and support for students with language learning needs in the general education classroom

·         Contribute to instructional coaching/ professional development of classroom teachers in English language development

·         Lead data collection on students’ language proficiency levels and communicate data with staff as needed

·         Monitor progress of all students qualifying for ELD services

Hiawatha Employment Logistics

·         Hiawatha College Prep students’ school day is from 8:40am-4:15pm, Monday-Thursday and 8:40am-2:30pm on Friday.

·         Teachers must be present from 8:15am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday.

·         Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 2:55pm-4:30pm.

·         All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all Family Events (conferences, academic fairs, beginning of year overnight trip, etc.) at the school.


Skills & Qualifications


·         Bachelor’s Degree

·         A track record of measurable success with students

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with colleagues, students, and families

·         Growth mindset

·         Ability to teach through an equity lens

·         High level of cultural competency

·         Prospective applicants must demonstrate a clear record of achieving significant gains with their students and have a strong belief that they can help close the opportunity gap for all

·         Experience working with students of color or students growing up in low-income households


Highly Preferred:

·         Current MN ESL License, or enrolled in classes to pursue licensure

·         Minnesota teacher certification

·         Bilingual or multilingual (Oromo, Amharic, Spanish, Somali, and / or Hmong)

·         A minimum of 2 years teaching in a high-need school with demonstrated student results
