Mission:  To equip every student with the knowledge, life skills, and global perspectives to contribute to society and respond to the needs of an ever-changing world.

The literacy coach will be part of a school literacy team leading efforts toward increasing literacy achievement for all student populations. The literacy team works with over 40 classroom teachers (PreK-5), EL teachers, SPED teachers, classroom educational assistants, and 1100 students.  Additionally, the literacy team partners with local and national partners for on-going professional development and coaching to improve our system.  The literacy coach will be hired by the school principal and assigned coaching responsibilities which align with team priorities and goals for school improvement, which include embedded, on-going professional development around developmental reading assessment and instruction, balanced literacy instruction, and rigorous expectations for learning.  

  • shared off-site professional learning and site planning with external partners,
  • data analysis,
  • modeling best practice in literacy instruction,
  • co-assessing with classroom teachers,
  • data coaching (data interpretation and analysis),
  • developing tools/sharing protocols for progress-monitoring student literacy development,
  • providing timely and actionable feedback to teachers to improve targeted instruction and increase student achievement, collaborative problem-solving and researching to support meeting the complex needs of striving readers
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of developmental reading and early literacy acquisition
  • Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative literacy assessments
  • Knowledge of  English-Language Arts Common Core State Standards and supportive curricular resources
  • Knowledge of most effective, research-based practice in literacy instruction
  • Ability to use multiple assessment tools and data points to discern school-wide areas for growth, grade-level needs, and individual supports
  • Ability to collect observational data, analyze instructional and environmental supports, and use data to help teachers plan for instruction which targets rigorous, accelerated oral language and literacy development
  • Ability to design, plan, and lead differentiated and on-going professional development
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with adult learners
  • Ability to work collaboratively with administration and teachers
  • MN Reading License, Master’s in Literacy Education, or current enrollment in a program for advanced degree in literacy education
  • Successful experience teaching elementary students (PreK-6) in a diverse urban environment
  • Successful experience with and deep understanding of focused, differentiated, small-group reading instruction (both homogenous and heterogenous groupings)
  • Training as a literacy coach (e.g. conducting observations, co-planning, modeling lessons, providing critical guidance and coaching) or at least one year of experience as an elementary literacy coach
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Desire to work with diverse populations of students and families
  • Ability to use advanced, embedded and on-going professional learning opportunities to continually analyze and support system-wide vision of continuous improvement of literacy instruction
  • Responsible work and attendance
