Mission of Technical Academies or Minnesota:  Our Mission is to provide innovative educational opportunities and develop career pathways for young adults in partnership with the public and private sector. The technical academies will seek to fulfill the talent needs of industry and service.


What makes our school different:  Technical Academies of Minnesota (TAM) is a multi-campus, project-based, charter school. Our first school, DREAM Technical Academy, opened in 2014 in Wilmar, MN. Our second school, CHOICE Technical Academy, opened in 2015 in Owatonna, MN. These schools offer a rare opportunity to see students become inventors, designers, innovators, and thinkers. It allows them the chance to explore their passions, no longer labelled by test scores or grade point averages. With the right team of advisors, IMAGINE Technical Academy will be a place where one can witness the full potential of young minds when they are freed from the constraints that traditional schools often place on them.

TAM will provide students in grades 7-12 with an individualized learning program that includes career preparedness, college readiness, and community partnerships and opportunities, in a project-based, teacher-led school. Technical Academies’ educational program has four main characteristics based on EdVision’s Design Essentials:

  1. Small Learning Communities, Advisory based: The intention of the small learning communities is to create a personalized culture with strong relationships to enhance student achievement. Teachers are known as “advisors” because they offer guidance and advice to students rather than take control of the student’s learning. This democratic culture values student voice and gives students support through a full-time, multi-age advisory system whereby each student is well known personally and academically by his or her teacher/advisor and peers. Each school will have advisories in the number of 15-20 students per advisory, with an assigned teacher/advisor. Often students participate in the same advisory for multiple years.

  2. Co-generated Project-Based Learning (PBL): Students participate in an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills. This type of learning climate encourages students, even under-achievers, to get involved in the learning process and choose their personal goals for learning.

  3. Authentic Assessments offer multiple paths for demonstrating student’s learning and performance on worthy, intellectual tasks. Authentic assessment provides the space for the student to effectively demonstrate acquired knowledge by performing a full array of tasks such as research, oral or written analysis, or collaboration, to flourish in the demonstration of their understanding of the acquired knowledge.

  4. Teacher Leadership or Teacher Professional Practice (TPP) is a democratic system, which consists of a formally organized partnership of school staff serving as the leadership team to provide the learning program. The small team of staff members operates as a circle, rather than a pyramid hierarchy, which allows each staff member a voice in making important decisions for the school. Much like a group of doctors or lawyers who collectively make decisions about how to best provide services for clients, the TPP provides structure and opportunity for teachers to create the education programming for their students.

Job Description: IMAGINE Technical Academy is a new charter school opening in the fall of 2017 in Rochester, MN. The school will be teacher-led and will operate under a project-based model. We are inviting licensed teachers to apply for a unique opportunity to reach students on a more personal level, working one-on-one with students as an "advisor" rather than a teacher in front of a classroom. Advising at IMAGINE will be a truly life-changing experience. You will coach a small group of (15-20) students in grades 7-12 on projects created based on their passions and goals. Advisors are expected to create quality relationships with students and families as well as create an environment where safe and supportive peer relationships blossom. Advisors also serve on the leadership team of the school and take on tasks to manage day-to-day operations. Candidates will also have the opportunity to work during the spring and summer to help IMAGINE be successful when it opens.

The requirements for the position are as follows:

  • MN Licensure in any licensure area or ability to qualify for alternative licensure
  • Belief that students need a voice in their education
  • Love of learning with students
  • Ability to mentor students in writing, reading, research, and math
  • Interest and ability to serve on the school leadership team
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn and use Restorative Practices
  • A student-centered philosophy of education
