I.          Position Title

Career Planner (Fulltime)


II.            Position Objective

This position provides high quality pre-employment transition career planning services to high school students (ages 14-21) with specific learning disabilities and other health disabilities including ADD/ ADHD. 


III.           Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities that have been identified as being essential to this position include, but not limited to:

·         Establish communication/referral processes—strengthen connections with school district contacts and ensure processes are clearly outlined

·         Identify and enroll students in alignment with targeted populations

·         In partnership with special education teachers/district contacts, establish small groups and meeting schedules

·         Provide career exploration/career counseling/career assessment information

o   students will be introduced to career exploration websites such as CareerWise, ONET, MCIS

o   students will complete career assessments identifying interests and aptitudes

·         Integrate Labor Market Information (LMI) into exploration 

·         Provide information and opportunities for youth to develop and demonstrate work maturity/employability skills; for example

o   complete mock job application

o   develop a resume

o   complete work safety training

o   complete team work activities

o   review work for quality/quantity

o   dress for mock job interviews

·         Develop and facilitate work‐based learning experiences

·         In alignment with the career pathways students identify, assist students in exploring postsecondary educational programs and/or

·         apprenticeships; integrate information regarding self‐advocacy for students to ensure they receive needed accommodations

·         Arrange guest speakers from colleges and industries to attend small groups and share information regarding college and apprenticeships

·         Facilitate students attending career fairs, college fairs, and industry tours

·         Arrange mock interviews

·         Identify students who need specific one‐on‐one services to facilitate the following:

o   self‐advocacy

o   connection to other resources/programs

o   portfolio development


IV.          Desirable Knowledge and Skills

The desired knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

·         Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures related to career counseling and guidance.

·         Ability to apply knowledge of the labor market to the background and experiences of clients.

·         Ability to discuss sensitive issues and develop trusting relationships with clients.

·         Knowledge of individual assessment and assessment tools.

·         Ability to design, develop, organize, and administer training.

·         Ability to work in a team as well as independently.

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients and team members.

·         Knowledge of and skills in the use of computers and programs, especially Microsoft Office Suite.


V.            Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must pass a criminal background check, be able to travel out of area independently (valid driver’s license required), and have either:

a) A bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, communications, or closely related field with two years’ experience in vocational counseling, working with youth, coordinating successful employment development plans, and/or in management.


b) 6+ years of progressive related experience beyond high school.


Priority will be given to applicants with extensive experience working with at-risk youth populations.

VI.          Responsibility for Public Contact

This position requires a moderate to high degree of public contact.


VII.        Work Environment         

This position will require traveling to different site locations within Stearns & Benton Counties in order to provide services. Involves working in a variety of school settings, an indoor office setting, may include of site meetings/events, possibly outside of regular businesses hours.

                Based upon qualifications.
