Job Title: Recess Monitor (Part Time)
Department: Dean
Supervisor: Dean of Students/Assistant Dean of Students
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


This position exists to provide general supervision of children during recess times.  The Recess Monitor promotes a safe and healthy environment and provides appropriate role modeling for students and other staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintain positive communication/interactions with students during recess..

  • Active Supervision - which consists of the following basic components:

    • Circulate throughout the playground

    • Maintain a constant presence and remain attentive to the activities of the students

    • Being on the playground before students start playing.

    • Staying in a reasonable proximity to the areas of activity.

    • Keeping all students easily in sight.

    • Avoiding distractions.

  • Student behavior monitoring and intervention:

    • Being knowledgeable of and consistently enforcing schools rules and policies.

    • Restricting students from roughhousing, horseplay, or other inappropriate behavior.

    • Controlling the play environment.

  • Checking the playground daily and appropriately addressing ground and equipment hazards.

  • Responding appropriately to emergencies.

  • Dismisses classes in an orderly manner at the scheduled time.

  • Encourage good manners.

  • Hand out 3 “SOAR” or Eagle Pride tickets to students (during EACH recess period) that are being safe, kind, and responsible.

  • Document ALL unexpected behavior in the communication log with all required information, and notify Dean of Students of any immediate harm or danger.

Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures; reports potentially unsafe conditions; uses equipment and materials properly.

Education and/or Experience

No prior experience or training is required.  Experience with children in grades K-8 preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
