Hiawatha College Prep (HCP) is a results-driven middle school that is part of the growing Hiawatha Academies charter school network. HCP serves 5th through 8th grade scholars.

 

HCP is currently seeking a hard-working, passionate, social- justice-oriented educator to join our Student Support Team as a Special Education Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.

 

Job Description

Every Hiawatha College Prep teacher has the opportunity to join a team of motivated, mission-driven teammates who are committed to taking responsibility for their students’ learning. Hiawatha teachers are charged with providing a rigorous, fast-paced, and highly structured learning environment for their scholars.  The Special Education teacher will provide direct instruction to students with identified special education needs and strategically support the general education staff with implementation of Individualized Education Plans.

 

The Special Education Teacher will work under the direction of the Principal and in collaboration with classroom teachers.

Responsibilities 

·         Write, implement, and track the goals for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)

·         Assist in the initial and three year re-evaluation of students to determine qualification and need for special education services including conducting achievements testing, data collection, observations, interviews, and completing functional behavior assessments

·         Provide direct academic and behavioral instruction and support for students in a Federal Setting Three/self-contained classroom.

·         Provide individual and group instruction in academic and life skills for students with special needs

·         Provide individual and group support for social/emotional skill

·         Work closely with other members of the Special Education Team (teachers, paraprofessionals, administration) and general education staff to ensure high quality service is being provided for identified students

·         Participate on the Child Study Team by attending meetings and supporting with the implementation of interventions to meet the needs of struggling learners with or without special education needs

·         Maintain compliant special education records

·         Perform other duties as required and assigned 

 

·         Special Education Staff must demonstrate knowledge of and support Hiawatha Academies’ mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior

Hiawatha Employment Logistics 

Hiawatha College Prep’s school day is 7:15am-4:30pm, Monday-Thursday; 7:15am-2:00pm Fridays (professional development sessions are often held on Fridays from 2:00pm-4:00pm).

All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all Family Events at the school. 

 

Skills & Qualifications 

·         MN Teaching Licensure (preferred): Special Education EBD, LD, or ABAS (dual license preferred)

·         Knowledge of Special Education law and Due Process compliance

·         Experience working with elementary students with learning and emotional-behavioral needs

·         Knowledge of writing and implementing Standards-based IEPs

·         Knowledge of MN EBD and/or SLD criteria and the evaluation process including: conducting Functional Behavior Assessments; understanding the use of Positive Behavior Supports; knowledge of how to write a Behavior Intervention Plan

·         Training or willingness to be trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

·         Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with colleagues and families

·         An ability to learn quickly and adapt in the face of challenges

·         An ability to lead and to follow

·         Exercise excellent judgment in decision-making

·         A willingness to go above and beyond to do whatever it takes to ensure the highest level of service for our scholars 

Highly preferred

·         Developmental Disabilities Licensure

·         Mild to Moderate Mentally Handicapped Licensure

·         Moderate to Severe Mentally Handicapped Licensure

·         Academic and Behavioral Strategist Licensure
