Special Education Advisor/Teacher - Vermilion Country School, Tower

Vermilion Country School

 

Teacher/Advisor – Special Education

 

The Vermilion Country School (VCS), a grades 7-12 public charter school serving the Lake Vermilion area in Minnesota’s North Country.

 

Teacher/Advisors work as mentors for approximately 15-18 students in the completion of VCS curriculum and Minnesota graduation requirements.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • facilitating academic and personal goal-setting
  • providing skills instruction
  • monitoring progress
  • communicating with parent/guardians
  • teaching classes
  • leading field explorations (possibly)
  • records maintenance
  • SpEd Specific Duties:
    • Maintaining SpEd paperwork including third party, compliance, MTSS, PARs, TSES,  and SpEd Forms.
    • Requesting SpEd supplies/materials and keeping inventory in regards to special funding requirements
    • Coordinating with administrators for testing, meetings, and transition responsibilities
    • Supervising and training paraprofessional staff members
    • Workload analysis to ensure proper delegation and documentation of service time
    • Ensuring students are receiving appropriate services through the year

 

Teacher/Advisors take on additional duties as necessary according to availability, interests, and talents; while also performing an active role on site-based leadership and service teams.  

 

Teacher/Advisors will take part in additional training in the EdVisions Project-Based-Learning model; as well as specific training in data management software, health and safety, and teaching and learning processes.

 

Specific Special Education Responsibilities:

 

The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education shall possess strong curriculum planning, classroom management, and communication skills. The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education will develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children according to the age, ability, and aptitude. The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education will link students’ knowledge of learning, and develop ways to encourage it further. The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education will challenge and inspire students to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding.

 

The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education must understand how to use individualized educational program plans to design and implement developmentally appropriate instruction and guidance, and how to evaluate the program's effectiveness. He/she must understand how to adapt and modify curriculum, projects, and instruction to meet individual learner needs; as well as apply remedial methods, strategies, and accommodations including assistive technologies to meet individual learner needs.

 

The Teacher/Advisor – Special Education must be able to apply behavioral theory and ethics in developing and implementing school behavior management plans, while teaching/advising in a variety of environments. Also, the Teacher/Advisor – Special Education must be able to help general education teacher/advisors and other special education teachers serving students in grades 7-12 adapt and modify curriculum and instruction to accommodate student needs; and apply systematic procedures for compiling data on a student or a group of students for the purpose of continuous program evaluation and improvement.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Current MN licensure in Special Ed, LD, EBD, ASD, or DD; or able to obtain.

Skills and demeanor to maintain a positive and nurturing school climate.

Successful background check.

Demonstrate a willingness to go “above-and-beyond” the role of a typical traditional classroom teacher.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Current MN licensure and experience in a subject area beyond SpEd.

Experience or familiarity with project-based and experiential learning, or a passion for innovative and student-centered educational models.

Ability to drive school vehicles and/or obtain CDL/Bus license for driving a small school bus.

Interest or background in Indian Education (highly preferred).

Experience in working in a team based model

A strong desire to actively participate in the creation of a supportive learning community, including possible service on the school’s governing board.
