Hiawatha Leadership Academy-Northrop (HLA-Northrop) is a results-driven elementary school that is part of the growing Hiawatha Academies charter school network. Hiawatha Academies opened HLA-Northrop, its second elementary school, in the fall of 2013. HLA-Northrop currently serves Kindergarten through 3rd grade scholars and will grow a grade a year until it serves students in grades K-4.


Educators at HLA-Northrop join a growing team of motivated, mission-driven professionals who are committed to going above and beyond for their students. All HLA-Northrop staff are charged with creating a safe and welcoming learning environment in which all students can thrive. Our teachers plan and implement rigorous, relevant, and engaging lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, and global studies (science and social studies) each day while also promoting curiosity, social/emotional learning, and positive identity development.


At HLA-Northrop, we are a school recognize that there is a strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning. We utilize the Responsive Classroom approach for managing school-wide and classroom culture and discipline. As educators, we are responsible for creating an environment which promotes a sense of belonging, significance and emotional safety for all students so they can focus on learning. We know that all students can meet high expectations for both learning and behavior when they receive the support they need to do so.


At HLA-Northrop we strongly believe in the use of restorative practices as opposed to punishments when students make mistakes or do not meet our community agreements.

We believe that when students are struggling to meet classroom expectations and having social-emotional challenges at school, they need the support of a team of compassionate adults who can assess the situation and provide student-centered, trauma-informed support structures to address the barriers to their success. We have a track record of success with this approach and have a yearly suspension rate of less than 1%.



HLA-Northrop is currently seeking a hard-working, passionate, social-justice-oriented educator to join our team as a Paraprofessional for the 2017-2018 school year.

Job Description


We are looking for a highly qualified paraprofessional to join our school team. The primary responsibility of the individual in this role will be supporting students individually or in small groups with specific educational, social and emotional needs in the general education setting. This is an hourly position including benefits.


Candidates that are selected for an interview will receive additional information regarding the specific roles and responsibilities.

Hiawatha Employment Logistics

  • Hiawatha Leadership Academy – Northrop students’ school day is from 7:10am-3:00pm, Monday-Thursday and 7:10am-1:15pm on Friday.

  • Teachers must be present from 7:00am-3:15pm, Monday-Friday.

  • Professional development sessions are held each Friday from 1:40pm-3:15pm.

  • All Hiawatha Staff are expected to attend and participate in all Family Events at the school.


Skills & Qualifications


Required:

  • Minimum of two years college education or bachelor’s degree

  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

  • Ability to work with diverse student populations

  • Ability to work independently and one-on-one with a scholar.

  • Experience and comfort offering toileting and feeding support

  • Ability to lift 35 pounds and comfortably sit on the ground for extended periods of time.

Highly Preferred:

  • Experience working with students with developmental and/or cognitive delays

  • Knowledge of special education law or experience working with identified special needs

  • Elementary or special education teaching license preferred

  • Bilingual or multilingual


Compensation
