(ADA/Text Version)

Hiawatha Academies is a growing network of high-performing, K-12 open enrollment public charter schools. We are driven by our mission that, “All Hiawatha Academies scholars will be empowered with the knowledge, character, and leadership skills to graduate from college and serve the common good.”

We have demonstrated success in student achievement, consistently recognized by the Star Tribune as Beating the Odds Schools.  Hiawatha Academies is proof of what happens when we give every child the opportunities they deserve.

Hiawatha Leadership Academy-Northrop (HLA-Northrop) is a results-driven elementary school that is part of the growing Hiawatha Academies charter school network. Hiawatha Academies opened HLA-Northrop, its second elementary school, in the fall of 2013. In 2017-18, HLA-Northrop will serve 390 scholars in grades K-4. During the 2016-17 school year, 82% of our students were identified as English Learners and 89% qualified for free or reduced price lunch.

Educators at HLA-Northrop are part of a growing team of motivated, mission-driven professionals who are committed to going above and beyond for their students. All HLA-Northrop staff are charged with creating a safe and welcoming learning environment in which all students can thrive. Our teachers plan and implement rigorous, relevant, and engaging lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, and global studies (science and social studies) each day while also promoting curiosity, social/emotional learning, and positive identity development.

At HLA-Northrop, we recognize that there is a strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning. We utilize the Responsive Classroom approach for managing school-wide and classroom culture and discipline. As educators, we are responsible for creating an environment which promotes a sense of belonging, significance, and emotional safety for all students so they can focus on learning. We know that all students can meet high expectations for both learning and behavior when they receive the support they need to do so.

At HLA-Northrop we strongly believe in the use of restorative practices as opposed to punishments when students make mistakes or do not meet our community agreements.

We believe that when students are struggling to meet classroom expectations and having social-emotional challenges at school, they need the support of a team of compassionate adults who can assess the situation and provide student-centered, trauma-informed support structures to address the barriers to their success. We have a track record of success with this approach - less than 1% of our total student population was assigned an out of school suspension last year.

HLA-Northrop is currently seeking a hard-working, passionate, social-justice-oriented educator to join our team as an English Language Development Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.
