About our Project

 

In 2018 Hiawatha will open a new innovative middle school that considers some significant changes compared to more traditional models of school.  

 

Our design ideas emerged from a community-rooted Design Team that challenges the traditional school model and dreamed of a design for school that includes significantly higher levels of student agency, has an interdisciplinary approach to curriculum, and connects the learning in the school to real social-justice action in our communities. We dream of using these approaches to school as a way to create a school that is more child-centered, more individualized in its approach, and more humanistic and dynamic.

 

Designing a school around these concepts is new for Hiawatha, and the ideas are complex with tensions to explore, The design features need significant building, testing, and iteration in the year ahead.

 

Therefore, we are hiring a team of people that we will call the Build Team. This team of passionate and disciplined innovators will take our new vision for a school, and, working with the Principal of the school and the Senior Leadership of Hiawatha Academies, will endeavor to make the vision come to life through further definition and clarity.  The Build Team will build the features of the program, testing the effectiveness of the design elements, iterating along the way, and codifying our learning so that we can use the learnings across Hiawatha and the sector more broadly.

 

We will hiring builders that focus on Interdisciplinary Curriculum and on student agency with a focus of making learning connected to social action in the world/external community.  

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

 

Co-create vision and approach to designing active learning environments rooted in deep, relevant interdisciplinary content.

Develop a strategy that holistically integrates research on student learning, motivation and interdisciplinary learning.    

Experienced in different types of interdisciplinary and project based design.

Work in partnership with school team and Hiawatha leadership to create the concrete manifestation of the school model canvas.  

Design and build curriculum tools, practices, protocols that are aligned to the school model canvas.

Draft a vision for each priority area that clearly articulate the student outcomes, assessments and activities that are rooted in the core anchors of the design:  student agency, transdisciplinary and critical consciousness.  

Create assessment models that show rigorous outcomes aligned to common core standards but transcends traditional standardized assessment methods.  

Develop and integrate strategies that implicitly develop habits within the core academic courses.

Outline a set of deliverables and budget that you would build vs. source, vs. curate.  

Prototype all build deliverables for testing.  


Conduct Trials and Research Cycles:                           

Identify key research questions and assumptions to pilot.  

Collaborate with school design teams to develop a system and process for testing and iterating on school model components

Create and manage dashboards and other instruments for data collection, analysis, and synthesis

Foster knowledge sharing and disseminate findings and lessons to maximize cross-pollination of ideas and practices

Secure commitment from all stakeholders and mobilize other involved parties to participate in R&D cycles


Lead in-school coaching & adult development

Model how to execute research based strategies and/or interventions

Build the capacity (through coaching, training, etc.) of the internal team and school design members to

make meaning of their data and pivot accordingly

execute research-based interventions and strategies

develop metrics, collect and interpret data


Codify Knowledge (practice and content and prepare for cross team sharing)

Work with our project leads and learning agenda writers to refine core practices and store them in an accessible way

Compile ‘implementation plans’ so that the team understands what worked and what didn’t work during execution

Conduct research to help schools make stronger shifts, inform our learning agenda, and/or support Transcend publications

Summarize our findings and progress in the form of compelling research briefs, blogs, etc.

Educational Background and Work Experience

Bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university, Master's degree preferred

A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant work experience as an educator or related field working directly with schools, preferably as a school leader, program designer, or design consultant.

Proven record of success

Training and coaching school level administrators, teachers, and support staff

Expertise in implementing and revising social-emotional programming and/or critical conscious curriculum

Experienced in different types of interdisciplinary and project based design.

Adept in conducting rapid cycle testing to build and iterate on program model elements.  

User centered design experience a plus   

Experience working with students of color and/or students growing up in under-resourced communities                

 

Special Work Requirements                                                        

Minneapolis is the preferred location for this role, but we will consider candidates who live outside of the Twin Cities area.   If you do not live in the Twin Cities, there will be about 40% travel required for this job.  Travel will consists of visiting Hiawatha schools in Minneapolis to observe, prototype, or work with small groups of students/staff to learn about the strengths and weaknesses in our model.
