Lead Youth Worker, Part-time - East Side Neighborhood Service/Menlo Park Academy

Job posting for:         Out-of-School Time Lead Youth Worker @ Venture Academy

Location:                    Venture Academy, 315 27th Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN  55414

Reports to:                 Program Manager

Status:                        Part-Time, Non-Exempt. 15 hrs./week during the school year. Summer hours may be available.


Broad Scope and Function of Job:

Assists in facilitation of ESNS’s after school program for youth in grades K-12 at a school or community-based site. Builds developmental assets of youth by carrying out the goals of East Side’s Youth Department:  provide students with a safe environment where creative educational activities use their time constructively, students receive support from staff and volunteers trained to consistently reinforce their developmental needs, students develop knowledge, respect, and understanding of people of diverse ethnicities and ages, and students develop increased 21st Century skills.  Must be able to relate with and provide outreach to all segments of a multi-cultural community including urban youth.


Major Job Responsibilities:


Is responsible for, but not limited to the following functions:


1.      Program Implementation (65%):

  • Assists ESNS’ Youth Program Manager in the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of groups and activities for students within existing program formats.  Activities generally focus on skill development in communication, academic development, problem solving, leadership, and community engagement.
  • Development of leadership, self-esteem, character and identity, community service learning, and positive adult and peer relationships are also targeted outcome areas.
  • Lead small and large group meetings including academic or enrichment activities.
  • Assists in developing Continuous Learning Plans and academic goals for students along with working with a team of other staff.
  • Help prepare and serve daily snacks and may attend food safety training.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • May assist with the summer school programming which includes, planning, direct service, supervision, data collection and evaluation of the group.


2.      Family and Community (5%):

·         Conducts youth outreach in the community to link youth and families with available community/agency resources.

·         Operates youth programs within the context of families and community.  Facilitates parental involvement through direct communication, volunteer participation, family/parent events, and evaluative input.


3.      Supervision (15%):

·         Meet regularly with Youth Program Manager to reflect and review program activities and individual youths’ progress.

·         Assists in the supervision and development of volunteers, interns and youth aides.

·         Actively participates in orientation and training to gain the necessary understanding to carry out Youth Department and program goals.



4.      Other (15%):

  • Responsible for transporting/walking youth home after programming. Depending on site, may involve driving 15-passenger agency vehicles in all seasons.
  • Assist in care of students during all program components.
  • Attend and assist in preparation and clean-up of family events
  • May assist with community gardening activities or other special projects.
  • Attend training and professional development opportunities with the ES Youth Department team.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the ESNS Youth Program Manager.


Job Requirements and Qualifications:



  • Must have preliminary experience working in youth settings
  • Must have willingness to learn more about the social/emotional, nutritional, and physical needs of K-12 youth, as well as the structure and design of quality youth programming is required.
  • Preferred minimum two years of experience working in youth support services such as after school programming, summer camps, coaching, or related field.
  • Must have valid MN driver’s license, ability to drive a 15-passenger van, and access to reliable transportation for some program sites.
  • Preferred proficiency writing and speaking in Spanish.



  • Experience working with urban youth and parents.  Experience working with groups and program planning in a school or community setting.  Experience working in collaboration to achieve common goals. Experience in tutoring youth with an emphasis college readiness and life skill development. Experience running a group and understanding group dynamics and how to increase youth engagement.
  • Experience with meeting timelines and completing projects promptly in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • Experience running a group of 6-25 students between the ages of 6-18 and understanding group dynamics and how to increase youth engagement.


Compensation: $13-$15 hourly
