POSITION & PURPOSE: The VES Ojibwe Language Curriculum Specialist/Teacher will develop curricula to teach and engage students (grades 6-12) in learning Ojibwemowin - verbal, written, reading -thus promoting their language skills. We also have opportunities to involve students and their families in this programming. VES has a focus on experiential activities, e.g., field trips and applications of core course concepts (Math, Science, Language Arts/English, Social Studies/History), that will benefit from having Ojibwe language as a component to further enrich our students' understanding of their culture as well as the contemporary world around them. SCHOOL DESCRIPTION Voyageurs Expeditionary School is a 6-12th grade innovative public charter school located in the beautiful Northwoods of Bemidji, MN. The mission of VES is to provide students with the necessary tools to lead productive lives through hands-on learning, service to others, and environmental stewardship. The staff works hard to build strong relationships with students and families to create a welcoming learning environment for all students, staff, and families. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Develop and teach Ojibwemowin language activity units (verbal, written, reading) appropriate for a variety of student and family member levels. * Create, modify, identify/purchase, and/or improve curriculum resources and materials in a variety of formats to support Ojibwemowin for students and families. * Evaluate/provide recommendations to improve curriculum planning and teaching methods. * Evaluate and interpret assessment data, strategies for tracking student progress, and communication of results. * Coach teachers and instructional aides in strategies for effective instructional delivery and curriculum planning to incorporate the Ojibwe language into courses as needed. * Collaborate with the VES American Indian Cultural Coordinator and American Indian Education Student Support Staff to implement and maintain Ojibwemowin services for developing the most effective educational programs for our students and families. * Develop and maintain records/databases on student and program activities, materials, and supplies. * Organize and facilitate classes and develop materials/resources/etc. for VES family and staff workshops and potential Bemidji community training services. * Performs other job-related duties as assigned and contributes to the overall VES effort to support our students culturally, socially, emotionally, and academically. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Knowledge of the Ojibwe language with respect to traditional and contemporary Ojibwe culture, customs, and practices * Knowledge of curriculum development for Ojibwe language and Indigenous education practices * Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively in both verbal and written formats in English * Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively in both verbal and written formats in Ojibwe * Ability to create and present effective speeches/presentations to the VES community (students, families, staff) and the greater Bemidji area community * Ability to work independently and in team situations with staff, students, family members, and/or community members to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships * Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines * Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and VES Policies & Procedures * Ability to maintain privileged confidential information Preferred Qualifications: * One or more of these credentials suffices for demonstration of Ojibwemowin verbal, written, and reading proficiency. * Undergraduate Teaching degree (K-6, 5-12, K-12) or Tribal Eminence Credential * Demonstrated Ojibwe language skills plus work experience with youth through nonprofit or Indigenous-based entity * Closely related field with four years of teaching and/or curriculum work experience, or * An equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position as described above.
