As a school dedicated to teaching students with Dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences, the Lower School intentionally utilizes the Orton-Gillingham and Wilson Language Programs for reading and writing instruction. The Lower School Associate Teacher learns from the lead teacher how to plan, organize, and implement appropriate instructional programs in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Through this mentoring experience, the Associate Teacher will gradually take on lead teaching opportunities in the classroom, preparing them to be a lead teacher, either at Groves or elsewhere. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: * Learns from the lead teacher who delivers research-based, individualized (direct instruction) teaching for each student focused on outcomes. Designing and adapting (direct) instruction to meet a range of student learning needs and interests, encouraging students' creative expression, incorporating student interests and passions, and developing critical thinking skills. * Assists with lesson planning and preparing learning activities for a balanced program of (direct)instruction and demonstration. * Supervises students and manages the classroom when the lead teacher is not present. * Provides student support within the classroom. * Actively contributes to creating an environment and culture in the classroom that engages students and helps them learn more effectively. * Implements key components of a Groves Academy education, such as strong relationship development with students, knowledge of the student learning profiles, evidence-based decision-making, and differentiation. * Communicates with parents on a regular basis by email or phone, conferences, and progress report writing with the support and guidance of the lead teacher. * Participates in professional development opportunities. * Upholds the Characteristics of Teacher Excellence at Groves Academy. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES * Provides timely information to supervisors, co-workers, and parents by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person. * Attends annual training sessions as required. * Performs miscellaneous projects and completes various tasks as requested by Division Directors. QUALIFICATIONS * BA/BS degree in education required. * Training and Licensure in Special Education is desirable. * Experience working with LD/ADHD students preferred. * An intuitive teaching ability and the adaptability to serve students with diverse needs. * Training in Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Language Programs preferred. * Experience teaching a structured literacy program * Classroom/resource room experience with grades 2-6 PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: * Ability to be adaptable to changing circumstances. * Creativity and ability to generate new ideas from a unique perspective. * Knowledge of and sensitivity to the special needs of students. * Able to treat each student with respect, fairness, flexibility, and in a professional manner. * Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development and modeling inclusive behaviors. * Able to use appropriate technology, including MS Office software (Word and Excel), Google Suite, Internet, communication systems, online grading systems, and assistive technology. * Able to select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when teaching new things. * Able to clearly and effectively communicate information and ideas in writing, verbally, and using a variety of media so students will understand. * Able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words, written material, multimedia, and audiovisual sources. * Understand and maintain the confidential nature of student, organization, and employee information, including and in accordance with HIPAA regulations. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB Incumbent must be able to: * Hear, speak, and effectively verbally communicate in the English language, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization. * Sit at a desk for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work sitting at a computer. * Stand or sit for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work teaching in the classroom. * Apply manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer keyboarding and office equipment use and review detailed reports and information. * Move around the school, office area, playground, and field trip locations repeatedly throughout the day.
