Job Title: Secondary Social Studies Teacher
Job Type: Full or Part-Time, Long-term Substitute with option to extend contract for 25-26 school year
Teach high school and middle school social studies classes as a long-term substitute for a teacher on maternity leave. Our highest need is from late February to late May, but we will consider hiring for the position to begin in late January at the beginning of the second semester and go until the end of the school year (June 6th, 2025).
Job Description
Arete Academy is seeking a full or part-time social studies teacher for bright students with learning differences. Most Arete classes are taught with a 1:8 teacher/student ratio. The teacher applicant should have strong relationship-building skills in their classroom.
This is a long term substitute position for the second semester. During the second semester, the position can be full or part-time with some flexibility in scheduling. A part-time schedule would be mornings only. A full time schedule would be 8:15am -3:30pm. Opportunities for additional hours may be possible. Full time teachers support our students with independent projects in the afternoons - bonus if candidate has interests/skills in filmmaking, arts, coding, 3D printing, engineering, and/or industrial arts. Arete is a collaborative environment and staff work together to meet the needs of the students and school. Teaching license preferred, but not mandatory. Teaching-related experience and flexible thinking required.
Job Description/Duties
Teach high school and middle school social studies classes in the mornings (US history).
Lead/co-lead non-instructional student activities like student project time (if full time).
Class sizes of 8-10 students or less at a time.
Develop and implement social studies curriculum for neurodiverse learners.
Facilitate projects that allow students to follow their strengths and passions.
Delve deeply into specific topics or units of study through enrichment activities.
Be empathetic and supportive of neurodiverse learners.
Collaborate with a team of educators to support students.
Accept and offer feedback, support, and coaching from fellow teachers and the school leadership team.
Communicate frequently and effectively with parents, staff, and leadership team members.
Preferred Skills
Ability to teach high-level courses in at least one of the above-named subject areas.
Excitement at the opportunity to adapt and alter curriculum in response to student interest.
Creative and resourceful.
Qualifications
Teaching or education-related experience; license-preferred
A professional degree related to the subject taught
Experience with special education, ADHD, learning disabilities, and/or gifted students preferred
Salary and Benefits
$30-$45/hour
