The Garden Assistants will work hard to grow fresh, nutrient-dense fruits + vegetables for the District&#8217;s Summer Feeding and School Lunch Programs throughout the summer growing season (June, July, and August). The produce harvested will also be used to facilitate lessons during student garden visits and help meet the needs of our local Food Shelf. Those hired will work with the advisor to set a schedule that fits their needs while helping the team achieve its weekly goals. Please expect to work 10-15 hours per week for 12 weeks. Students interested in gardening as a life skill, wellness goal, or career choice are encouraged to apply but no gardening experience is necessary. Candidates should be self-motivated, possess a strong work ethic, and enjoy time outdoors. The salary range for this position is $15.00 per hour to $17.00 per hour. Salary is dependent on experience. Benefits include sick leave. Job duties + Responsibilities: * Plant, irrigate, weed, harvest, wash, and pack over 30 varieties of produce. * Carry out the garden plan as laid out by the Farm to School Coordinator. * Clean garden and greenhouse space so that the plants growing are showcased well. * Ensure proper maintenance and care of tools and infrastructure. * Help visiting students have a safe and meaningful learning experience. * Encourage other students to learn new things and try new foods. * Be able to work independently, completing a list of tasks on your own after training. * Preserve seasonal abundance for the cafeterias to use in the 23-24 school year * Staff the on-site produce stand Tuesday afternoons in July and August. * Staff the Hutchinson Farmers Market booth three Wednesdays in June, July, and August. * Bring a positive attitude and an open mind. * Communicate scheduling needs and conflicts clearly. What you can expect: * 10-15 hours each week for 12 weeks in June, July, and August. Morning work is most common. Tuesdays will include pm hours for our Community Farm Stand. * Be prepared to work in rain, shine, cold, hot, and windy conditions with a positive attitude. Work days are somewhat weather dependent. * Clothing and footwear will get dirty. Sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy shoes are suggested. * Schedule will be somewhat flexible to allow space for students to hold other jobs. If hired, a schedule unique to your needs will be considered within reason. Excellent communication is expected. * There will be some set times for early season training and certain tasks, like harvesting, will require morning hours. * Some hours for September harvests, sales, and garden clean up will be needed.
