Compose, coordinate, and update nursing procedures for the district.
Identify health concerns of students through health assessments, screening programs and review of health history and health records. Monitor and supervise unstable health conditions as necessary, i.e. asthma, seizure disorders, diabetes, mental health, allergies, etc.
Coordinate immunization program for students enrolled in the district. Ensure MN state law immunization compliance for all students in the district according to school district policy and all MN state laws for new students throughout the school year.
Supervise and assure an accurate documentation system of student health information.
Review all health and emergency care plans for the district, as appropriate. Write care plans for students in buildings where there is not an RN in the office. Distribute and review health information forms each school year on students to ensure updated health records. Provide care conferences for all students and parents district wide, as needs are identified. Health and emergency plans will be written accordingly.
Assure and coordinate the development of written health and emergency plans for chronically ill or medically fragile students needing health procedures, medication and accommodations. Coordinate administration of medications and treatments to students per physician’s orders and parent authorization consistent with school board policy and MN law.
Participate in IEP health assessment and plan development and evaluation.
Evaluate/assess health status of students as needs arise and as requested. Communicate with, support, monitor and supervise staff in implementation of the health/emergency plans and continually evaluate student outcomes and response to nursing/health interventions.
Provide direct professional nursing services such as first aid, illness and emergency care, medication administration, specialized procedure and mandated reporter responsibilities.
Interpret medical information to school personnel as necessary to assist in the educational process and student safety.
Participate in planning programs (e.g., adaptive physical education, concussions, and field trips) that eliminate or minimize student health concerns that may interfere with learning. Inform school personnel of deviations that may affect learning.
Provide for continuity of care with appropriate referrals and follow-up.
Supervision of Building Nurses
Coordinate nurse’s meetings as needed to maintain workflow in the offices.
Determine if and when specific nursing tasks are delegated and to whom.
Provide training and supervision to health unlicensed personnel and others to whom nursing tasks are delegated and supervise care provided by them. Delegate/supervise duties in accordance to all state laws for delegation.
Ensure all district medication policies and procedures are followed. This includes medication disposal at the end of each school year for all school buildings. Ensure meds are counted according to procedure by building nurses or nurse and trained secretary and follow up on any discrepancies. Update medication policy and procedures on a rotating basis and as associated laws and regulations change.
Ensure district policies and procedures are followed for the distribution of medications on field trips and outings off school grounds.
Assess, plan and collaborate on the development of Individual Health Plans (IHP) to meet the needs of students with special medical conditions or concerns.
Supervise building nurses and assist principals on evaluation of the building nurses.
Parent/Guardian/Community Liaison
Serve as a liaison between school, parent/guardian, public health and community concerning health related matters.
Identify the physical, social and emotional health needs of individuals and families through systematic assessment utilizing professional skills, health history, physical evaluation and other assessment tools.
Assist families in locating community resources (e.g. assisting in signing up for medical assistance, other public assistance programs, etc…).
Provide mental health support including intervention and/or referral to appropriate school staff or community agencies.
Delegate appropriate functions to health offices. Provide supervision for delegation of direct and indirect cares. Follow all laws concerning delegation ensuring that it is appropriate.
Provide anticipatory guidance to children and families. Correspond with parents/guardians on health needs of students.
Teach and counsel students, individuals and families regarding the prevention of disease and disability and the maintenance of health.
Participate with the school wellness committee as well as regional, state, and local health agencies to promote wellness.
Coordinate prevention and control of communicable diseases. Implement policies of exclusion and re-admission for students with infectious and communicable diseases. Follow all laws for state and county reporting regarding communicable disease reporting.
Develop a school immunization program with district support and administrative and parent expectations.
Coordinate end of the year letters to parents for immunization requirements for the upcoming school year, updating care plans and updating medication authorization forms over the summer months.
District Duties
Maintain the allotted budget for the nursing department. Ensure each office has the supplies it needs to function. Orders supplies as needed for each building in the district and, along with other staff, maintains security of school health supplies.
Coordinate the maturation teaching program for 4th, 5th and 6th grades classes, keeping current with national and state curriculum standards.
Assure that equipment in the health offices is properly maintained. This includes keeping the audiometers calibrated as recommended by the state.
Maintain records of health information in Infinite Campus and ensure accuracy and thorough documentation district wide.
Act as School Health Services Liaison to the school system departments.
Compile statistical and health services outcome reports and other required health reports.
Provide nursing representation on the Crisis Management Team, the Safety Committee, the HS Bully Committee and the District Bully Committee.
Perform the nursing assessment piece of monthly Early Childhood screenings, inclusive of referral and follow-up with identified health matters.
Provide the nursing observation and documentation component for PCA’s for MA billing.
Attend all IEP meetings with a health component attached, keeping in contact with the special ed coordinator on all health matters.
Report all student emergencies to the building site school administrator. Accident reports will be filled out on these incidents.
Ensure the nursing sub list is current and all subs are trained according to state law.
Participate in projects that will advance the nursing practice at Kasson Mantorville, such as the BEACON project.
Maintain and train the Emergency Response Teams in each district building. Ensure procedures are up to date and mock drills are practiced.
Ensure unlicensed assistive personnel, bus drivers, playground supervisors, classroom teachers and special ed paras are up to date on appropriate medical information. Train appropriate personnel on medical cares, such as diastat, epi-pen administration, etc. Follows all laws regarding sharing of medical information when training and informing other staff.
Maintain AED’s for the district, ensuring that equipment is monitored and supplies are up to date.
Review all medical information on sports forms for all fall, winter and spring sports for HS and grade 7/8 students.
Coordinate vision and hearing screenings for the district. Follows state recommendations for vision and hearing screenings. Ensures follow up notification letters are sent to those students needing to be seen by a specialist.

Other LSN Responsibilities
