Summary
Under the supervision of the Head of School and guidance of the Special Education Director, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the activities of the Special Education department.
They are members of the District Leadership Team and report to the Head of School.

Educational Programming
District
* Assure proper staffing and contracts are in place to meet the needs of special education students.
* Provide direction and guidance to Assistant Coordinators on the assignment of caseloads for special education staff.
* Provide direction and guidance to Assistant Coordinators on paraprofessional assignments.
* Provides direction and guidance to the special education administrative team regarding appropriate service delivery models.
* Analyze efficacy of special education interventions and service delivery models.
Academy
* Assign caseloads for special education teaching staff
* Collaborates with the Special Education Teachers to onboard and support paraprofessionals.
* Create, monitor and adjust paraprofessional schedule
* Provide training and guidance to special education teachers in the roles of paraprofessional supervision
* Provide input regarding classroom placement for special education students
Coordination
* Assure that process is in place for accurate time and effort reporting
* Maintain current demographics regarding all students on IEPs as well as those in referral process
* Assure through self-review process that special education timelines and documentation is in compliance
* Provides direction and guidance to the process of special education referrals.
* Assure paraprofessional performance review process is followed
* Provide input to IEP teams and building administrators regarding amended consequences for students receiving special education services
* Assure process in place for students transitioning between schools or community agencies
* Assure process in place for determining special transportation needs.
* Provide guidance to Assistant Coordinators when there are staff shortages.
Communication
District
* Report weekly to head of school
* Maintain ongoing communication with special education director
* Maintain positive relationships with resident school districts
* Facilitate an active Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC)
* Establish working relations with colleagues, developing effective systems for reciprocal communication about students with special needs. This includes ongoing communication with building administrators.
* Maintain positive relationships with outside agencies, such as county social services, PACER, Disability Law Center, etc.
* Maintain productive communication with relevant local and/or state special education authorities about the special education program
* Establish regular communication mechanisms with assigned special education team(s)
* Acts as a liaison for the child find process.
* Organizes and oversees the district’s extended school year program.
Compliance
District
* Be knowledgeable of, and assure compliance with, relevant state and local regulations governing special education including placements, timelines, notifications, IEPs, parental roles, evaluations and procedural safeguards
* Assure program review compliance is completed based on MDE compliance schedule Act as district representative at IEP meetings when requested by Assistant Coordinators and when in conciliation
* In coordination with Head of Schools oversight of tuition billing, third party billing, and all Special Education financial reporting
* Assures process in place for reviewing evaluations and IEPs from out of district.
* Assure ongoing support for the parents of special education students with disabilities informing them of special education rights and procedures
* Assure process in place for reviewing evaluations and IEPs for compliance
* Member of all evaluation teams
* Serves as District Representative at IEP meetings and assures that others doing so understands these responsibilities.

* Provide due process training and support for special education teachers

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers,
regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate 9-figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to understand special education finance.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Computer Skills
Computer and technology skills enabling the incumbent to successfully complete the duties of this position are required. A high level of proficiency in Excel or equivalent is required; experience utilizing Smart Finance is preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Active license as a Special Education Teacher or another professional discipline (e.g. speech therapy) from the MN Department of Education
