Job Title: RISE Mentor
A 8 hour/day position at Faribault High School. This position begins immediately upon hire. Compensation is $22.97/hr plus benefits.
Program Overview
RISE (Realizing Individual Student Excellence) is an advising program for Faribault High School students needing academic support – as well as additional/intentional mentoring – to overcome barriers in their lives. RISE is an asset- and strengths-based effort focused on supporting students to graduate on time with a plan for what comes after high school. The core of the program is to build a trusting relationship between students and caring, trained mentors who advocate on behalf of students and help overcome challenges they face in their lives.
Tasks
* Track student progress and conduct individual academic counseling sessions with each RISE student in their cohort at least weekly
* Work with each student to create an individual plan that identifies areas of strength, need, interventions, goals, and college aspirations
* Collaborate and communicate with parents to create postsecondary education plans for all RISE students
* Promote career exploration opportunities, including connecting RISE students with job shadows, internships, and job opportunities
* Advocate for the physical, mental, and chemical health of RISE students, including connecting RISE students to community health resources, when needed
* Communicate with teachers, administrators, guidance counselors and social workers in those cases where additional or different levels of academic support and intervention are necessary
* Monitor RISE student attendance and assist with designing and implementing attendance interventions when needed
* Recruit RISE students for summer programs
* Arrange and lead college visits for groups of RISE students
* Assist RISE students and families with the completion of college applications, financial aid forms, and scholarship opportunities
* Become knowledgeable of community-based supports within Faribault and facilitate connections to these community resources for RISE students when necessary
* Assist with parent night events and other opportunities that bring stakeholders together for the purpose of supporting RISE students
* Conduct home visits to discuss the progress and future planning of RISE students with their parents/guardians
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
* Ability to engage and communicate effectively with RISE students and their families
* Ability to work collaboratively with RISE team members, school district staff and other groups and organizations
* Ability to plan, implement and evaluate academic support interventions
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to understand and work with different cultures and backgrounds
* Ability to collect and analyze data to inform programming
* Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
* Ability to work select evening and weekend hours
Preferred qualities
* Familiarity with Faribault and Rice County organizations and resources
* Familiarity with higher education resources and opportunities
* Bilingual in English and another language
