Job Summary
To contribute towards a comprehensive school-counseling program which includes academic, career, and personal social domains, designed to fit the needs of the student population and characteristics. The school counselor provides programming, which includes but is not limited to, conflict resolution skills, coping and refusal skills, character education, diversity, and study skills.
Essential Functions
* Counsel individual students and small groups with presenting needs and concerns.
* Monitor transcripts and graduation requirements, and provide academic advising.
* Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
* Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources and connect them to students.
* Lead the ALC attendance review process.
* Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.
* Assist students with the development and monitoring of 4-year plans with students to include college and career preparation.
* Work with colleges and universities to implement a variety of advanced course offerings that provide college credit, an associate degree, and/or industrial certifications.
* Assist students in their development of Career Pathways using the students’ career interest and aptitude information gathered from the MCIS platform.
* Identify and provide financial aid and scholarship information to students and parents.
* Coordinate the advanced academic testing programs (AP, ACT, and ASVAB).
* Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
* Coordinate social and emotional learning.
* Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs, priorities, and program objectives.
* Assist with Coordination of Credit Recovery.
* Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, teachers, administrators, community, and staff.
* Prioritize daily work load in a busy student center space and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Plan and present to large and small groups.
* Demonstrate professionalism and ethical practices.
* Maintain confidentiality of information about students and families.
* Assist with the supervision of students during non-academic education activities.
Other Functions
* Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
* Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
* Participate in appropriate professional activities.
* Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations as directed.
* Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Required
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. * M.S. degree in Professional School Counseling from an accredited institution or related field, Minnesota certification as a school counselor, or have the ability to obtain a Tier 2 MN School Counselor Licensure
* Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
* Must have the proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
* Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.
* Meet professional counselor education requirements of school, district and state.
