It borders Grand Forks, ND and is very close to the University of North Dakota and Northland Community and Technical College. The district's K-12 enrollment is approximately 1950 students as well as a thriving preschool program. The district has four separate school buildings housing grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Position Summary: The Director of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the effective planning, maintenance, and operation of all district buildings, grounds, and physical facilities to ensure a safe, clean, efficient, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and the community. This leadership role oversees custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping staff while working closely with district administrators to manage facility use, long-term capital planning, safety protocols, and compliance with all applicable regulations. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, technical expertise in facility systems and maintenance practices, and a commitment to excellence in school facility management. Success in this role requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, respond effectively to emergencies, and maintain positive working relationships with staff, vendors, and the public. Essential Duties: The duties of the Director of Buildings and Grounds is to ensure all district facilities and grounds are safe, clean, and functional. This includes overseeing daily operations, supervising custodial and maintenance staff, managing hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations. The Director conducts regular inspections, manages the department budget, and oversees accurate timekeeping for payroll. They coordinate facility projects, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and help develop emergency and maintenance protocols. The role also includes managing facility use by internal and external groups and maintaining strong communication with staff, vendors, and community partners to support the district&#8217;s operational goals. Key Responsibilities: * Collaborate with building principals, the athletic director, and the transportation department to coordinate routine and seasonal maintenance schedules. * Supervise and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; coordinate with external contractors when specialized service is required. * Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all district facilities and grounds, including landscaping and snow removal; assign tasks, establish priorities, and evaluate staff performance to ensure high-quality outcomes. * Conduct daily inspections of district buildings to assess and address needs related to electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and boiler systems. * Monitor and review the work performance of custodial staff, ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and outdoor areas meet district standards. * Verify, approve, and submit employee time cards for payroll processing, promptly resolving any discrepancies related to schedules or reported hours. * Develop and manage the department's supplies and materials budget; procure and track inventory to support ongoing maintenance and custodial operations. * Monitor supply levels and coordinate the replacement of equipment and materials for custodial and grounds staff as needed. * Coordinate the scheduling, staffing, and facility preparation for school functions, athletic events, and community activities to ensure seamless execution. * Respond to facility-related emergencies in a timely and effective manner, including outside of normal working hours when necessary. * Act as the district&#8217;s primary liaison with contractors, inspectors, and regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards related to buildings and grounds operations. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. A valid Minnesota 2nd Class C Boiler License (or higher) is required or must be obtained within a district-defined timeframe. Candidates should demonstrate effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, and preventative maintenance programs. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively, hold or obtain a valid Minnesota driver&#8217;s license, respond to emergencies outside regular hours, and perform physical tasks such as lifting over 70 pounds and working on ladders. Preference will be given to applicants with post-secondary education or technical training in facilities management or related fields; prior experience in building and grounds maintenance, including supervision of custodial and maintenance staff; knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, building codes, OSHA standards, and environmental regulations; proficiency in maintenance software, work order systems, and basic office technology.
