GENERAL SUMMARY:
Ojibwe culture is essential to learning in our community. It aids the students and teachers to communicate and shape our collective thinking to better accommodate the students’ daily lives. A pedagogy that acknowledges, responds to, and celebrates our student's Ojibwe culture, offers an effective and fulfilling education for students at the Fond du Lac Ojibwe School.
Culturally responsive teaching is a pedagogy that we can utilize for our students. We will use this pedagogy to recognize the importance of including students Ojibwe Culture in all aspects of learning.

The school-wide Special Education Coordinator provides instructional leadership, policy development recommendations, program design and evaluation, staff development, budget recommendations, and implementation of a comprehensive program of special education services and includes the Gifted and Talented Program for American Indian students with disabilities kindergarten through grade 12.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Ensuring appropriate delivery of both special education instruction and related services as stipulated in IEPs.
* Ensuring compliance by the school with all state, federal laws and BIE regulations relating to students with IEPs and students referred to special education.
* Keep the District Administrator informed of his/her responsibilities concerning compliance with all laws, regulations and administrative rules that affect special education/pupil service programs.
* Consult with Director and District Administrator on legal concerns; parent/student issues.
* Ensuring that services provided by contractual personnel are of high quality, provided in the LRE, and are aligned with the students’ IEPs/504 plans.
* Establishing and maintaining communication with parents of students in the program. Effectively communicating to parents and guardians the special education process including the process for referrals, evaluations, annual IEPs/504 plans, and re-evaluations as well as parental rights granted by IDEA.
* Provide leadership in curriculum development.
* Procure and distribute new, specialized materials and equipment
* Facilitating workshops / meetings for parents, as well as identifies resources for parents of students with disabilities.
* Coordinating with the student’s special education team and case manager to ensure all required documents are completed in a timely manner.
* Ensuring that the special education team and case manager complete quarterly IEP progress reports and that the parents/guardians are provided with a copy of the quarterly IEP progress report.
* Provide training and technical assistance to case managers, special education teachers, related service providers and support service professionals.
* Serve on system, state or community councils or committees as assigned or appropriate.
* Ensuring that case managers maintain student files (paper and electronic) according to school and BIE standards.
* Ensuring that IEPs are developmentally appropriate, standards-based, strength based, and relevant to individual students.
* Overseeing special education inventory of equipment / materials.
* Gathering and reporting data for all reporting requirements concerning students with IEPs/504 plans and other required reports.
* Maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues such as changes in federal and BIE special education policy.
* Research methods and techniques for identifying and teaching gifted and talented students.
* Provide pre-service and in-service training for all personnel involved in the education of gifted and talented students.
* Work with staff and parents to identify students who give evidence of high-performance capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop such capabilities.
* Work with the Gifted and Talented service providers to establish and operate model projects and exemplary programs for the identification and education of gifted and talented students, including cooperative programs involving business, industry, and education.
* Provides direct services and/or arranges for accelerated learning experiences for gifted and talented students in accordance with their IEPs.
* Work with staff to provide educational enrichment experiences (e.g., music, art, computer, drama, leadership) within the classroom and/or in after school programs.
* Advocating for special education with school leadership.
* As appropriate connecting with students outside providers, pediatricians, and therapists to support student’s needs in the classroom.
* Maintaining confidentiality of student records and information.
* Supervise assigned personnel, conduct annual performance evaluations, and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions.
* Provide staff training and professional development based on needs assessment.
* Attends training and other related sessions specific to meeting compliance with Bureau of Indian Education assurances and requirements.
* Appropriate work attire is required.
* Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
* Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
* Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
* Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
* Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
* Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
* Maintains a clean and organized work area.
* Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
* No Driver’s License Required.
* Masters’ Degree in Education and a current State of Minnesota Special Education license is required.
* Three years of experience teaching students with disabilities is required.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
* Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, data bases and/or data entry, spreadsheets and Microsoft Outlook is required.
* Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
* Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
* Must be a team player.
* Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
* Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
* Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
* Some travel is required.
