CAAEP is an alternative high school of around 90-100 students. We are a restorative practices program and work with students to build communication and conflict resolution skills, as well as building community through RP practices.
Alternative schools are a smaller setting for students who are "at risk" of not graduating from high school. We work to build strong relationships between students and all staff, and with each other. Because we are a smaller setting, we are able to meet students where they are and help them build skills academically and social-emotionally so they can find great success in high school and beyond. Science Teacher
Position Overview
The successful candidate will be an individual who firmly believes:

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' skills and competence in one or more fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics; develops students skills and abilities in scientific methods and problem-solving, as well as an understanding of the application of science in the solution of practical problems. This position is considered exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Primary Responsibilities
Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:
* Teach knowledge and skills in one or more fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics in accordance with district curriculum
* Promote critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas
* Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning
* Develop lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction
* Design learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday existence, including scientific research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and laboratory activities
* Instruct students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life
* Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed
* Maintain familiarity with district and Minnesota state standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests
* Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research
* Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws
* Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents
* Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
* Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees
* Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment, maintain inventory records, and ensure equipment is in good working order
* Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent

* A wide range of science subject areas, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, and other related areas (e.g., mathematics)
* Data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans
* Applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
* Ability to:
* Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone
* Use computer network system and software applications as needed
* Organize and coordinate work
* Communicate effectively with students and parents
* Engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
* Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have earned a B.A. or B.S. degree, with a Master's degree preferred, and current Minnesota State Licensure in Science (one or more fields). Additional demonstrated qualifications include: commitment to the equitable education of all students, creative planning and organizational skills, and highly effective interpersonal skills. Previous experience working with students using differentiation, guided reading, and technology skills preferred. Prefer candidate with experience working with diverse learners.
Licensing Requirements
Current Minnesota Science license or eligibility is required.
Salary and Benefits
The starting pay for this position is between $47,509 - $53,459 and is based on Education Minnesota Cloquet Master Agreement. Your initial placement is dependent on your qualifications (education and years of relevant experience).
