Job Title: Special Education Coordinator/Teacher (1.0 FTE)
Coordinator Job Description:
The Special Education Coordinator is responsible to collaborate with teachers, social workers, directors and other administrative personnel to provide the highest caliber of services to special education students. The Coordinator will provide the main communication between all interested parties in the design and implementing of the special education system and program improvement processes. This position reports to the Leadership Team and has a strong collaborative relationship with the Special Education Director. Job duties include:
- Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among special education staff and between the special education and general education staff
- Collaborate with Leadership Team to carry out school policies and state laws related to special education
- Assist Director of Special Education with potential revisions to special education policies and procedures
- Maintain a comprehensive due process calendar and ensure all deadlines are met
- Collaborate with the District Assessment Coordinator to ensure special education students receive appropriate accommodations and testing materials for all district and statewide assessments
- Maintain organized files, including due process and fiscal monitoring documents under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and Leadership Team to ensure fiscal compliance
- Coordinate daily schedules of special education staff in collaboration with Leadership Team
- Observe and report on school’s due process standards and compliance to Director of Special Education
- Attend meetings as assigned or required
- Review, revise, and implement LJA’s Total Special Education Systems (TSES) Manual in collaboration with Director of Special Education
- Coordinate contracting of related service providers in collaboration with the Leadership Team
- Serve as main point of contact for school’s Third Party Billing process
- Review workload analysis with Leadership Team and schedule caseloads and service minutes appropriately according to analysis
- Facilitate the Child Study process and hold weekly or biweekly child study meetings to determine possible student needs for evaluation and other options for student intervention
- As a member of a team, conduct initial evaluations and re-evaluations and complete due process paperwork within required timelines.
- Ensure intake process for new students is followed and collaborate with Leadership Team to ensure new students are well supported through the transition to LJA in accordance with their IEPs
- Support educational assistants including training, scheduling and providing structured feedback for their individual/classroom work with students
- Contribute to the improvement of instruction within the school by communicating strategies, interventions and other programming ideas with school staff.
Teacher Job Description:
The Special Education teacher will provide co-taught math and literacy instruction to students with a variety of disabilities in an inclusive mainstream setting. Although the job duties vary based on individual student needs, job duties will likely include:
- Develop or adapt materials and lesson plans; provide direct instruction to individuals and groups, co-teach and/or collaborate with general education teachers. Be enthusiastic about co-teaching math and literacy classes with a general education teacher
- Evaluate instructional materials for appropriateness to student needs and scaffolding when appropriate and continually monitoring student performance
- Ensure compliance with special education due process including developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs in collaboration with families, students, and teachers
- Create weekly measurements of student progress and report quarterly on their movement toward achieving their IEP goals
- Facilitate regular, positive and open communication with families, caregivers and students to ensure a clear understanding of student strengths, challenges, goals, progress, and potential. Facilitate required IEP team meetings
- Regularly assess and evaluate learning based on best practice. Measure and report on student progress, and reinforce students' outstanding contributions and performance
- Maintain various required records and data according to established policies and procedures, ensuring the accurate and timely availability of such information as needed
- Participate in team meetings, committee meetings and professional development with general and special education staff as assigned.
- Participate in all aspects of the school community including several evening community events as assigned
- Serve on an educator-led school committee
- Knowledge of effective behavior strategies and writing behavior support plans
- Administer required Minnesota state/LJA required tests
Preferred Skills and Qualities:
- Minnesota Special Education teaching licensure: Preference given to teachers with multiple special education licensures or ABS.
- Knowledge of Special Education law, governance and due process compliance
- Experience with middle school students in an urban setting
- Experience co-teaching
- Ability and desire to work on a collaborative, interdisciplinary team to support students with special needs in inclusive programming.
- Commitment to providing students access to LJA’s rigorous, general education curriculum.
- Timely recordkeeping and excellent organizational skills.
- Passion for supporting student development and empowerment.
- Ability to creatively and enthusiastically support the individual learning needs of a diverse special education population.
