OVERVIEW
Oshki Ogimaag Community School (OOCS) seeks a passionate, innovative, and dedicated educator with a deep love for the outdoors and a genuine interest in doing work that honors, revitalizes and preserves the Anishinaabe language and culture.
At OOCS, educators collaborate in a culturally-rooted, interdisciplinary model, with small class sizes, that honors the whole child-mind, body, heart and spirit. Teaching is deeply connected to land, language, environmental stewardship, and outdoor learning in the forests and on the magnificent shores of Gichigami (Lake Superior).
In this role, you will:
* Support the mission of OOCS by creating a learning environment rooted in Anishinaabe language, values, and seasonal cycles
* Design hands-on, community-based learning that prepares students to become lifelong learners
* Contribute to the academic success and holistic wellness of future generations
We are especially interested in candidates with knowledge of Ojibwe language, traditional lifeways, and seasonal cultural activities—however, this is not a requirement, training will be provided.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Minnesota standards and OOCS’s curriculum (Open-Up Resources for Language Arts and Math), submitted weekly to Google Drive.
2. Differentiate instruction to meet diverse academic, developmental, and cultural learning needs of individual students. Follow a tiered system of support (for academics and behaviors) that is in accordance with OOCS policies.
3. Develop and maintain a classroom community environment that is safe, inclusive, reflective of students’ identities, conducive to learning and supports emotional regulation. Meet students where they are at with support, consistency, compassion, clear direction and boundaries - educating with the understanding that the teacher-student relationship is the foundation that learning will be built upon.
4. Utilize effective classroom management strategies consistent with the Responsive Classroom framework to promote positive behavior, self-regulation and emotional growth.
5. Monitor progress through formative assessments and adjust instruction based on student needs to support academic growth for all students.
6. Collaborate with colleagues, families, and administrators to ensure student success and build a culture of shared support. Contribute to a supportive school culture through respectful, direct communication and collaborative problem-solving.
7. Incorporate appropriate technology and other resources to enhance learning experiences, while teaching media literacy and meeting OOCS’s expectations of reduced screen time and emphasis on hands-on learning.
8. Participate meaningfully in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional practices, cultural fluency, and reflective teaching (plan to be on-site a full work day for all scheduled PD days unless otherwise specified).
9. Collaborate with Special Education Coordinator to ensure IEPs and other individualized student support plans are being implemented with fidelity, curriculum is modified appropriately and accommodations are being provided.
10. Uphold and model professional and ethical conduct in all communication and interactions (with students, families, peers, and Community), with attention to tone, body language, and cultural sensitivity.
11. Apply trauma-informed, strengths-based approaches to teaching and discipline that preserve student dignity, foster self-regulation, and are inclusive and culturally sensitive (in alignment with OOCS policies and Responsive Classroom framework).
12. Design a physical classroom space that is aesthetically pleasing, inviting, engaging, clean, calming, inclusive, and visually aligned with the mission of OOCS, that supports focus and self-regulation with intentional spaces for reflection or sensory breaks.
13. Professionally meet deadlines and honor schedules. Attend weekly after school meetings.
14. Maintain thorough, organized documentation and record keeping of lesson plans, student data, assessments, grades, reports and communication.
15. Meet Environmental Education goals for classroom, and work with the team to support meeting all goals per OOCS’s contractual obligations to our authorizer, Osprey Wilds.
16. Conduct conferences as scheduled by OOCS, attend Community and family events.
17. Attend IEP meetings and other meetings related to special education evaluation, 504 plans, and other individualized support plans as scheduled by the Special Education Coordinator.
18. Complete all Child Study, pre-referral, IEP input and evaluation documentation and paperwork requested per deadlines from the Special Education Coordinator.
19. Complete reports to the Board of Directors as requested within the deadline set by Administration.
20. Collaborate in a meaningful way, in curriculum mapping, event planning, staff meetings and school wide initiatives.
21. Complete assessments on deadline per the OOCS assessment calendar, use assessment results to identify areas of strength and needs for development in instructional supports and differentiation.
22. Honor the mission of OOCS in all work with students and with intention integrate the mission across disciplines.
23. Send weekly communication to families (‘cc Director and Assistant Director) with classroom-specific updates, overviews, reflections, news and/or notes. Send weekly bullet points of classroom activities and pictures to Assistant Director for newsletter by Thursday of each week.
24. Create/maintain student portfolios regularly with photos, artifacts and documentation that reflect growth and learning.
25. Other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or related field
2. Valid Minnesota teaching license (or eligible for licensure)
3. Skilled in implementing accommodations, modifications and supports for students with individualized plans
4. Strong skills in written communication, lesson planning, and data-informed instruction
5. Skilled at providing differentiated instruction and academic support to meet individual needs.
6. Proficiency in classroom management strategies that are aligned with OOCS pedagogical philosophy and the Responsive Classroom framework
7. Working knowledge and understanding of foundational math/literacy instruction, MN standards and MDE-approved assessments
8. Familiarity with library services and resources for educational enrichment
9. Passion for working with, educating, supporting and respecting young learners and and promoting their holistic development and wellness
10. Knowledge and respect for Anishinaabe language and traditions (or a willingness to learn, partnered with respect)
