PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Chemical Health Specialist works with the building administration and student services to meet the social, emotional, behavioral health of students who demonstrate areas of need or exposure to chemical use or dependency. Through individual and group counseling services and outside services and supports, develops alternative solutions to support informed decision making in order for student learning to continue in a safe educational environment. This position also develops and implements prevention activities as needed for the general population in collaboration with the building administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Conduct chemical pre assessments on identified students with alcohol and other drug abuse concerns.
* Identify and refer students with mental health issues to the appropriate personnel.
* Provide individual support for students, including support and intervention groups.
* Act as a resource to support students and families before, during, and after the treatment process.
* Facilitate building compliance with district, state, and federal policies and guidelines.
* Develop, implement, and evaluate on an annual basis a chemical prevention plan.
* Develop a process to be followed by the chemical health specialist when alcohol or drugs are a concern with a student.
* Provides staff training around youth drug trends, classroom prevention materials, stigma reduction, and non-use promotion.
* Participate, as needed, in building teams designing plans/services to meet individual students needs (e.g. grade level teams, Problem Solving Teams, Child Study Teams).
* Create and disseminate focused, clear, and consistent messages to inform students, parents, and the community about critical and pertinent chemical health issues.
* Serve as a liaison between school, parents, community agencies, police, and business entities to create community awareness about critical and pertinent chemical issues
* Maintain accurate record keeping while maintaining confidential records.
* Collect and summarize data related to counseling activities and students’ alcohol and other drug abuse
* Be resourceful toward building curriculum efforts from the continuum of chemical prevention to intervention programming.
* Maintain accurate records of projects related to prevention, intervention and follow-up.
* Collaborate with other student support personnel to administer and facilitate the effective delivery of services.
* Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Completion of approved chemical dependency training program including Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC) certification from the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.
* Bachelors degree in Human Services or related field.
* Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health, and Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy
* Knowledge of Counseling techniques and procedures, and professional rules of conduct.
* Ability to assess chemical concerns in students.
* Knowledge of the dynamics of chemical use, abuse and dependency and its effects on individuals, families and society.
* Knowledge of community agencies available to assist students and families
