Description:
The Shakopee School District is currently seeking an American Indian Education Program Specialist. 6.5 hours/day on student days. 
 

    Job Summary and Duties:
    The American Indian Education Program Specialist enhances the educational experience of American Indian students by promoting academic success, cultural identity, and equitable outcomes. This position works collaboratively with students, families, educators, and community members to support culturally responsive instruction, student engagement, and family empowerment. The Specialist also supports systemic change through professional development, mentoring, and leadership that centers racial equity and Indigenous pedagogy
     

    Student Academic & Social-Emotional Support

    • Provide academic and mentoring support to American Indian students across grade levels (particularly grades 6–12).
    • Facilitate tutoring, mentoring, and culturally relevant student programs.
    • Conduct regular student check-ins to assess academic and emotional well-being.
    • Support affinity groups and extracurricular activities that affirm American Indian identity and connection.
    • Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings for Native students as needed to advocate for culturally appropriate supports and ensure equitable access to services.

    Cultural Integration & Instructional Support

    • Collaborate with teachers and instructional staff to integrate American Indian culture, history, and traditions into curriculum and instruction.
    • Coach licensed staff on incorporating MN State Standards, especially American Indian education requirements.
    • Assist with curriculum development, classroom activities, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
    • Identify and model evidence-based practices that support academic achievement and positive cultural identity.
       

    Professional Development & Equity Leadership

    • Design and implement culturally specific professional development for educators and staff across district schools.
    • Serve on district committees and lead equity-focused initiatives to eliminate racial disparities and racial isolation.
    • Contribute to system-wide transformation efforts centering racial equity and Indigenous ways of knowing.
       

    Family & Community Engagement

    • Build trusting relationships with American Indian families and community members.
    • Serve as liaison between families, schools, and community organizations to support student success.
    • Increase family and community awareness of educational initiatives, curriculum, and support services.
    • Coordinate and assist with cultural events, parent meetings, and community workshops.
       

    Program Support & Data Analysis

    • Maintain accurate records of student participation, academic progress, and program effectiveness.
    • Assist in conducting needs assessments and evaluating programs and outcomes.
    • Prepare reports and present data to inform continuous improvement in American Indian education initiatives.
    • Represent the department at events, meetings, and other forums as needed.

    Qualifications/Experience/Skills:

    Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, American Indian Studies, Social Services, Counseling, Youth Studies, or related field. A combination of education and related experience will be considered.
    • 3–5 years of related experience in education or American Indian communities.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of American Indian culture, heritage, and educational issues.
    Preferred:
    • Prior experience with culturally responsive teaching, student advocacy, and professional development.
    • Proficiency or working knowledge of the Dakota language or Ojibwe language. 
     

    Skills & Abilities

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with students, families, and educators.
    • Skilled in community outreach, program coordination, and culturally relevant student engagement.
    • Proficient in technology, educational software, and data tracking systems.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across diverse school environments.
    • Ability to travel within the district and attend after-hours events as needed.
     

    Working Conditions:
    Classroom, office, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, sitting, keyboarding, etc.
    Ability to safely lift 50 pounds.
     

    Compensation Package:

    • Pay range $25-$30/hr depending on relevant experience, skills, and education.
    • 2 personal days and 15 sick days annually
    • 8 paid holidays
