Job Title: Virtual Homebound Special Education Teacher
Employee Group: Teachers
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Student Services
FTE: 0.15 (6 hours per week)

Job Summary
Provide specialized instruction, modifications and accommodations to students with disabilities receiving homebound instruction for 1 hour per day (5 hours per week) with 1 hour per week of prep time for a total of 6 hours per week of work. Follow all due process requirements under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act and Minnesota state statutes. Work collaboratively with building staff. Participate in IEP meetings and facilitate communication between staff and families if necessary.

Job Functions

  • Provide direct instruction to support students with disabilities receiving virtual homebound instruction for one hour per day. 

  • Serve as liaison between the school and the home for the delivery of instructional services to students who qualify for homebound services in general or special education.

  • Design virtual lessons to meet the student’s unique needs. 

  • Provide appropriate feedback to the student’s teacher(s) of record regarding student progress during homebound sessions

  • Apply principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery.

  • Use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and special needs.

  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

  • Prepare required reports and maintain all appropriate records.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Current Minnesota Teacher licensure in Special Education. EBD license preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills with families, students and staff.

  • Sensitivity and compassion for the needs and issues for families and students with disabilities.

  • Desire to provide assistance and advocacy to families and children with disabilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, families, and school personnel.

  • Knowledge of and understanding for the legal and ethical requirement to keep information about students and families confidential.

  • Willing to learn the specifics of South St. Paul educational philosophy and goals for students.

  • Excellent teaching skills.

  • Excellent technology skills.

  • Commitment to working effectively with culturally, economically and socially diverse students and families.

  • Ability to understand and follow data privacy rules and regulations related to students

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is frequently required to kneel, reach, stand, walk and climb stairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
