SUMMARY: The 9th Grade Girls Basketball Coach will be responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting a successful basketball program for the 9th grade team. This position emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic achievement. The coach will work directly with student-athletes to foster a positive environment that supports both athletic and personal growth while aligning with the mission and values of Hopkins High School and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Plan, organize, and conduct practices and competitions for the 9th grade girls basketball team.
- Provide instruction on basketball fundamentals, techniques, conditioning, and strategies appropriate for high school athletes.
- Supervise student-athletes at practices, games, and during travel.
- Promote and model sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and discipline both on and off the court.
- Assist in managing equipment, uniforms, and inventory.
- Support athlete academic performance and monitor eligibility requirements.
- Maintain compliance with all Hopkins School District, MSHSL, and NFHS rules and policies.
- Communicate effectively with the head coach, athletic director, athletes, parents, and school staff.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Previous basketball coaching or competitive playing experience is preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational or athletic setting is preferred.
- Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
- Current MSHSL coaching certification (or ability to obtain prior to season start).
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Required Knowledge:
- Rules, techniques, and fundamentals of basketball.
- Principles of athletic conditioning, strength training, and injury prevention.
- MSHSL, NFHS, and school district policies and procedures governing athletics.
- Child development and positive coaching strategies.
- Equity, inclusion, and cultural competency in athletics.
- Ability to teach and demonstrate basketball skills and techniques effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with athletes, parents, and staff.
- Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes.
- Organizational skills for managing practices, equipment, and events.
- Ability to enforce rules and maintain discipline respectfully and fairly.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires mobility to work in a gymnasium, on athletic courts, and in training facilities, along with the stamina to actively demonstrate basketball techniques, conduct practices, and stand for extended periods of time. The coach must have the strength to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including equipment, gear, and supplies. Adequate vision is needed to observe athlete performance and review printed materials, and effective hearing and speech are essential for clear communication in person and over the phone.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in gymnasiums and training facilities, as well as during travel to competitions. Exposure to noise and evening or weekend hours is required during the basketball season. Travel to away games, tournaments, and events is required.
Hours & Compensation:
80 days total.
Stipend range: $1,500 - $3,200
