Lead Groundskeeper

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate semi-skilled work, responsible for day to day operations and maintenance of all district grounds and for all sporting events and/or projects in all weather conditions, and the maintenance of equipment for grounds.  Tasks will include equipment care, daily checks, maintenance, mowing, spraying, fertilization programs, parking lot upkeep, striping, snow removal, and athletic event setup. This position also must work closely with facility user groups, community education department, coaches, and the district''s activities director. This position reports directly to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate and communicate with other administrators and faculty for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently. 

  • Provide direction and training to building & grounds maintenance team members. 

  • Safely operate hand tools, testing instruments, and vehicles common to the trade. 

  • Prepare watering schedules and determine the need for spraying, fertilizing, and pruning. 

  • Possess the ability to interpret plans and sketches and carry out landscape designs. 

  • Responsible for ice and snow removal as needed. 

  • Calculates amounts and applies herbicides according to industry safety procedures; understands and follows material safety data sheets and labels, and required emergency treatments for specific chemicals.  

  • Maintains pathways and roads, patching potholes, cleaning drains, and sweeping debris.  

  • Operates power equipment such as, but not limited to, edgers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and tractor/loaders as necessary.  

  • Sets up stadium and athletic fields for sporting events, including marking athletic fields.  Assists in the custodial maintenance of the stadium, including athletic field and bathrooms after events.  

  • Performs repairs to equipment.  

  • Perform other duties around the district that may be assigned by the Buildings & Grounds Manager and Director of Buildings & Grounds.

  • Performs the duties of custodian; cleans the building and grounds as needed..

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of grounds keeping and snow removal methods, materials and equipment; general skill operating standard grounds keeping, snow removal, cleaning and maintenance supplies and tools; general skill creating and keeping records of service; general skill using standard email systems; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to read; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, regular ability to carry up to 50 pounds, occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force, some ability to lift 30 pounds above the head; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires speaking or hearing and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Safety training must be completed within six (6) months of hire.

One (1) to three (3) years experience working in a custodial position preferred.

3-5 years of successful experience in building and grounds maintenance.

Strong communication skills; verbal and written.

Ability to give direction to and train colleagues.

Valid driver''s license in the State of Minnesota.
