Reports To: Director of Special Education
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $53,885 - $88,223 based on education and experience

Position Summary
The Physical Education / Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) / Health Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing health, physical education, and adapted physical education instruction for students with a range of abilities and needs. The teacher promotes lifelong fitness, wellness, skill development, and safe participation while ensuring instruction aligns with Minnesota Academic Standards and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when applicable.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Instruction & Planning
  • Develop and implement engaging lessons aligned with Minnesota Standards in Physical Education and Health.
  • Provide DAPE instruction based on student evaluations, motor assessments, and IEP goals.
  • Modify curriculum, equipment, and environments to meet individual student needs.
  • Use evidence-based practices to support physical, motor, social, and emotional development.
  • Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
Assessment & Documentation
  • Complete motor assessments and DAPE evaluations in accordance with MN criteria.
  • Monitor and document student progress toward standards and IEP goals.
  • Maintain required records, including grades, progress reports, and IEP documentation.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to present levels, goal development, and service plans.
Collaboration
  • Work closely with general education teachers, special education staff, related service providers, and paraprofessionals.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, expectations, and concerns.
  • Collaborate with school teams on safety plans, behavior supports, and student accommodations.
Classroom & Equipment Management
  • Maintain and organize physical education equipment and spaces.
  • Ensure proper supervision and enforce safety protocols at all times.
  • Adapt lessons and equipment to support physical accessibility and safety needs.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and district initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with district policies, state laws, and licensure requirements.
  • Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and district expectations.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license in:
    • DAPE (Developmental Adapted Physical Education)
  • Health Education license (or ability to obtain/corrective plan if needed)
  • Knowledge of motor development, adapted physical education strategies, and evidence-based PE instruction.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous teaching experience in PE, DAPE, or Health.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Safety Care Certification (training provided by district).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, move, and position students or equipment as required.
  • Active supervision in gymnasiums, outdoor fields, playgrounds, and fitness spaces.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids in accordance with district safety guidelines.
