ISD #316 Greenway Public Schools is hiring a Boys Varsity Head Track and Field Coach.

Stipend Amount/Range: Salary determined per the activities schedule in the master agreement of both schools.
Job Summary: The Head Boy’s/Girl’s Track & Field Coach provides leadership, vision, and direction for a unified boys’ or
girls’ track and field program shared between two high schools. The coach is responsible for developing a positive,
inclusive, and competitive team culture while coordinating well planned training/practices, meet preparation, athlete
development, and staff (assistant coach) supervision. The coach is expected to design and coordinate both in and out of
season programming, supervise all athletes and coaches, and help properly maintain all track & field equipment used by
the program. This position requires strong communication skills, a high level of collaboration, and a commitment to
student-athlete growth, sportsmanship, and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As the Head Coach, he/she:
1) Shall develop mission/vision statements and statements of philosophy/program guidelines to be shared with all
appropriate stakeholders and respective district activities directors.
2) Has full responsibility for the overall supervision/direction of his/her program, including coordinating with 7th/8th
Grade (Non-MSHSL) coaches, as well as C Squad/JV and Varsity teams. The Head Coach is required to have meetings
prior to and at the end of each season with all lower level coaches to provide direction and feedback.
3) Is responsible to establish and ensure basic philosophies of participation at each level of their respective activities are
adhered to. (i.e. what differentiates or qualifies a C-squad vs. a JV vs. a Varsity player & what is the focus/emphasis for
participants at each level).
4) Oversee and provide guidance and assistance as necessary and appropriate for all Non-MSHSL/youth programs
contributing to the GNK MSHSL Track & Field programs.
5) Is responsible for adhering to all district policies and procedures for student participation, including checking for
completed registration and supporting all eligibility decisions of school administration.
6) Teaches appropriate rules and regulations of the sport, including both MSHSL and NFHS rules.
7) Adheres to the Code of Ethics for high school coaches (attached).
8) Is responsible for the general health and welfare of students in his/her program and gives appropriate attention to
athletes who are injured or ill or otherwise incapacitated.
9) Collaborates regularly with the Head Boys’/Girls’ Track & Field Coach to align training philosophies, facility use, meet
operations, schedules, and program goals across genders.
10) Recruit, supervise, and mentor assistant coaches and event-area coaches (sprints, distance, throws, jumps, and other
specialties).
11) Is responsible for collaborating with assistant coaches and captains to annually develop appropriate emergency
action plans to be submitted to activities directors.
12) Establish consistent coaching standards, practice plans, and athlete management expectations across all event
areas.
13) Will be primarily responsible for striving to teach and maintain good sportsmanship and developing positive public
relations in the school and community.
14) Is responsible for keeping practice periods for his/her sport within the confines of the time specified by the Activities
Director; and is to keep the Activities Director informed of practice schedules during any non-school or holiday period.
15) Manage meet entries using approved software (ex: Athletic.net) and ensure athletes are placed appropriately to
maximize team and individual success.
16) Coordinate relay lineups, alternates, and event assignments based on performance data, evaluation, and strategic
planning.
17) Communicate meet information, itineraries, and expectations to athletes, families, and staff in a timely manner.
18) Must report regularly while his/her sport is in season to the Activities Director with regard to the developments in
his/her program.
19) Develops and implements a clear plan for the skill and physical development/strength training of players within the
program, including particularly making available robust summer skill and player development opportunities.
20) Is directly responsible for a complete inventory and general upkeep of the equipment used for his/her sport at all
levels, and will provide the Activities Director with an updated list within two (2) weeks of the end of the season, including
particularly game jerseys.
21) Is responsible for assuring that he/she and his/her assistants are knowledgeable of the rules of the Minnesota State
High School League, Iron Range Conference, Arrowhead Conference, and Region 7A and any other region we are a part of
and abide by them at all times.
22) Participates in and adheres to all formal observation and evaluation requirements as set forth by the activities
directors. Receives and reflects upon annual survey feedback from parents and players.
23) Assists in the hiring, observation, and evaluation of all assistant coaches within the program.
24) Seeks and engages in sport-specific professional development opportunities (clinics, camps, etc.)
25) Must meet licensing requirements as set forth by the Minnesota Department of Education and the MSHSL and meet
the following requirements:
a. Maintains an open account on the MSHSL site: Coach’s Dashboard
b. Meets all Continuing Education requirements as dictated by the MSHSL.
c. Oversees the requirements of lower level coaches required by the MSHSL.
d. Is responsible for the actions and conduct of his/her team.
26) Makes recommendations for letter awards and is responsible for clarification of the award policy to athletes and
parents in writing at the start of the season. Submits names for letter winners to the AD office on an appropriate timeline
prior to needing certificates or awards for banquets, etc.
27) Is responsible to ensure recognition of team and individual accomplishments and works with the activities director to
maintain school displays of these results.
28) Shall take appropriate action to see that all gym & field areas, track surfaces, shower and locker rooms are clean and
safe for student participation.
29) Is responsible for explaining school district policies to those involved in the program.
30) Provides updated rosters to the activities directors of both schools.
31) Works with booster clubs or parent volunteers to coordinate any necessary fundraisers. Has all fundraisers
pre-approved by school board action through submitting them to activities directors at least one month in advance of the
fundraiser.
32) Develops, maintains direct involvement with (as allowed by MSHSL bylaws), and oversees all aspects of an
elementary/youth Track & Field introductory/developmental Track & Field program to support the MSHSL program.
Requirements:
? Valid Minnesota coaching certificate or Certified MSHSL Coaches Education Program.
? Verify completion of six quarter credits or 60 clock hours in first aid and the care and prevention of athletic
injuries.
? Have the necessary knowledge and experience to coach in specific sport or activity.
? Prior track and field coaching experience desired; head coaching experience preferred.
? Strong knowledge of track & field training principles, event-specific progressions, and athlete safety.
? Ability to supervise and evaluate assistant coaches.
? Demonstrated success in building strong team culture and working collaboratively with other coaches.
