SUMMARY: The Boys Middle School Basketball Coach is responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting a positive and developmentally appropriate middle school basketball program at Hopkins West Middle School. The coach emphasizes fundamental skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, effort, and personal responsibility. This position works directly with student-athletes to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages growth both on and off the court while aligning with the mission and values of Hopkins Public Schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Plan, organize, and conduct middle school basketball practices and competitions.
- Provide instruction on basketball fundamentals, basic offensive and defensive concepts, and skill development appropriate for middle school athletes.
- Promote and model sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and positive behavior on and off the court.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, and team activities.
- Emphasize athlete safety, proper warm-ups, conditioning, and injury prevention.
- Assist in managing basketball equipment, uniforms, and facility use.
- Support student-athletes in maintaining academic eligibility and positive school behavior.
- Foster a fun, inclusive, and development-focused environment that encourages participation and growth.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor''s degree preferred.
- Previous basketball coaching or competitive playing experience preferred.
- Experience working with middle school–aged students in an educational or athletic setting is preferred.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- Valid Minnesota driver''s license.
- Required district or league coaching certifications (or ability to obtain prior to the season).
Required Knowledge and Skills
Required Knowledge:
- Fundamentals, rules, and basic strategies of basketball.
- Age-appropriate coaching methods and skill progressions for middle school athletes.
- Principles of safe practice planning, conditioning, and injury prevention.
- School district and middle school athletic policies and procedures.
- Equity, inclusion, and cultural competency in athletics.
Required Skills:
- Ability to teach and demonstrate basketball skills effectively and safely.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents, and school staff.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires mobility to work on a track, infield, and training facilities; stamina to demonstrate athletic techniques and lead practices; and the ability to stand for extended periods of time. The coach must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, including equipment, hurdles, blocks, and training gear. Adequate vision and hearing are necessary to ensure safe participation and observe athlete performance. Effective verbal communication is required to provide clear instructions during practices and meets.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed at outdoor and indoor athletic facilities. Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor practices and competitions. Evening and weekend hours are required during the season. Travel to away meets, invitational events, and postseason competitions is required.
Hours & Compensation:
75 days total.
Stipend range: $1,500 - $3,200
