Start Your Online Application Now ASSIGNMENT DETAILS Position Title: FMS School Counselor Department/Building: Forestview Middle School Reports to: Building Principal Hours: 8 per day, Monday through Friday Union: AFSCME FLSA: Non-Exempt QUALIFICATIONS: Required: - Current Counseling license issued by the MN Department of Education - Master''s Degree in School Counseling Preferred: - Two years'' experience working with students in a school setting - Experience with students of diverse backgrounds - Experience with mental health counseling POSITION SUMMARY: To provide a comprehensive school counseling program focused on enhancing student''s academic, career, and personal social development. Our comprehensive school counseling program is designed to fit the unique needs of our students and school. The school counselor provides programming which includes conflict resolution skills, coping and refusal skills, character education, diversity, study skills, and mental health support. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Knowledge of group guidance philosophies - Knowledge of normal developmental milestones for school aged children - Knowledge of individual and group counseling techniques - Knowledge of students'' academic, social and emotional needs - Knowledge of community resources for school aged students and their families - Communicates effectively with students, parents, faculty and supervisors ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Counseling/Assessment/Outreach - Fosters the personal growth, educational development, and emotional well-being of all students - Provides one-to-one and group counseling to students who need support in various areas of social emotional and mental health support - Creates a positive, caring and nurturing learning environment for all students - Consult with teachers, staff, parents and other significant people regarding the needs of students - Participates in appropriate meetings concerning student placement and programs - Collaborates with community resources to provide support for students dealing with family issues such as family change, grief, homelessness, abuse, alcoholism or incarceration - Provides family outreach and serves as a school-family liaison in situations where parents are unable or hesitant to become involved with the school - Makes arrangements for hospital or homebound instruction when needed and provides liaison service for school and treatment-related situations Registration & Curriculum Involvement - Makes recommendations for student placement considering student''s academic understanding of grade-level standards as indicated on their benchmark assessments and grade-level classroom progress. - Supports registrar in scheduling task of organizing students into teams - Actively supports and participates in discussions pertaining to student''s progress and growth in the areas of academic, social/emotional, and behavior. This can include grade-level team and building MTSS meetings reviewing student specific data Inservice and Professional Development - Participates in data retreats and leadership/intervention teams to respond to the needs of the students and set site improvement goals - Provides in-service education to other school personnel to enhance their ability to promote healthy functioning and respond appropriately to student difficulties - Represents school counseling department on various faculty committees - Participates in the planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of district-wide comprehensive school counseling program Other duties as assigned PHYSICAL FACTORS: - Frequent: walking, standing, sitting, hearing, talking, listening, and seeing Brainerd Public Schools uses the applicant tracking system from Frontline Education to manage employment applications online
