POSITION TITLE : Special Education Coordinator REPORTS TO : Director of Teaching and Learning POSITION OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the Special Education Coordinator is to provide leadership and oversight of the day to day functions of the DaVinci Academy Special Education Department and programs as they align with the mission and vision of the school. RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties of the Special Education Coordinator may vary based upon specific assignments. Duties may also change at any time based upon administration reexamination of student or program needs. Assists the directors in developing the strategic action plan to ensure fiscal and educational/behavioral program compliance with an emphasis on continuous improvement in student outcomes; Supervises special education department, including case managers, behavior team, and due process specialists; leads hiring, retention, evaluation, and feedback of these departments; Adheres to all due process procedures and fiscal compliance requirements; Assists case managers in compliance and monitoring including ongoing improvement and corrective action plans; Provides leadership and assists special education staff in complying with District, State and Federal rules/regulations pertaining to students with disabilities; Provides leadership in the day-to-day operations of the special education department including case manager assignment, scheduling, absence management, extended school year programming, and staff development; Provides leadership in instructional best practices, progress monitoring and curriculum for students with disabilities; Assists with the development and administration of the special education budget and managing fiscal resources including but not limited to special education purchasing, inventory, maintenance of effort, invoices, and oversight of contracted services; Assists MA billing processes in coordination with 3rd Party Billing Vendors; Serves as a District Representative, empowered to make decisions and commit resources at meetings; Assists in overseeing due process procedures as defined by state and federal law pertaining to special education students, ensures due process paperwork is completed in a timely manner and processes and procedures are followed; Consults with school personnel and parents of children with disabilities regarding appropriate programming and/or follow up services and assures appropriate reporting to parents; Assists in leading alternative dispute resolution meetings; Engages in ongoing professional development and attends administrative meetings to stay current with special education legal requirements and best practices; Hosts consistent special education roundtable discussions with special education staff to ensure continuity in communication across the department; Implements and enforces all policies and regulations; Acts as a liaison between DaVinci Academy and various service agencies within the service area; Provides good public relations and customer service to families, MDE, and the general public in representing the district; Performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of a special education administrator; Comprehensive knowledge of special education laws, rules, regulations, and procedures; Thorough knowledge of leadership and management principles; Ability to assist in hiring and supervising staff effectively; Ability to demonstrate confidentiality and function under very stressful situations; Ability to deal with and resolve difficult problems independently; Ability to interpret and apply guidelines, policies, and procedures consistently; Ability to process and use complicated data; Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing; Ability to present to small groups and large groups; Ability to write reports and correspondence; Ability to use modern office equipment, technology, and related software; Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of a Special Education Teacher. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred; Considerable experience in a job-related field; Embedded training, support and mentoring available. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATION Minnesota licensure as special education teacher or related service provider from Department of Education; Administrative License (Special Education Director) Preferred, not required. SUPERVISION Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Special Education (contractor) and Director of Teaching and Learning. WORKING CONDITIONS (Physical/ sensory requirements and environmental conditions) Work may occasionally require long hours including early morning and evening; 12 month position; This is sedentary to light work requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information through normal spoken word; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, inspections involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
