Job Title: EL Teacher - High School-3 positions
Job Description: 1.0 FTE EL Teacher at Faribault High School, 3 positions for the 2026-2027 school year. These positions will teach a few self-contained EL language development classes in reading, writing and grammar. They will also be expected to assist upper-level EL students with vocabulary development in content areas.
Essential Functions:
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials providing effective teaching strategies adhering to the District philosophy and vision.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences in a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies; maximizes time on task.
- Creates a classroom environment that responds to the needs of individual learners.
- Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet individual students needs.
- Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate.
- Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and development of good study habits.
- Adheres to health and safety policies including using precautions of safety and health plans.
- Communicates with parents in a timely manner; maintains positive and constructive communication with students, staff, parents and community.
- Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques.
- Shares responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school.
- Protects students, equipment, materials and facilities taking necessary and reasonable precautions.
- Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
- Works cooperatively with parents and other staff members to reinforce the educational program for each child.
- Attends workshops, seminars and conferences as well as staff, department, curricular development and committee meetings and staff-development sessions as required.
- Encourages and facilitates work of other staff members in a collaborative, supportive environment.
- Evaluates accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods; provides progress and interim reports for feedback
- Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
- Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school''s curriculum.
- Works cooperatively with special education and EL staff to report student progress and growth, as applicable.
Works with the District literacy coach(s) and curriculum to develop a strong educational program and classroom.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Differentiated Instruction: Proven ability to scaffold complex high school texts and lectures for students at varying English proficiency levels
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Skill in interpreting ACCESS for ELLs scores and formative assessments to drive instructional pivots and placement decisions
- Co-Teaching & Collaboration: Experience in "push-in" or co-teaching models, effectively partnering with content-area teachers to modify curriculum
- Technology Integration: Proficiency in using instructional technology and digital tools to enhance language production and engagement for Gen-Z learners
- Cultural Responsiveness: The ability to create an inclusive environment that values students'' home languages and cultures as assets rather than deficits
- Advocacy: Ability to act as a bridge between EL families and the school, ensuring parents understand graduation requirements, post-secondary options, and school activities
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced high school setting, managing a caseload that may include SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) and Long-Term ELs
- Communication: Highly developed verbal and written communication skills to effectively interface with students, staff, and the diverse community of the district
- WIDA Standards & Framework: Deep understanding of the WIDA English Language Development Standards and how to apply them to grade-level academic content
- Second Language Acquisition Theory: Proficiency in the principles of linguistics and the stages of language development for adolescent learners
- MN State Benchmarks: Familiarity with Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards to ensure EL instruction supports core content mastery (Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.)
- Legal Compliance: Knowledge of federal and state laws governing EL programming requirements and civil rights obligations
Licensure: State of Minnesota ESL-licensed teacher. Alternatively, if you wish to pursue EL teaching with a different teaching license, an Out-of-Field permission will be requested on your behalf, or if you have obtained a Bachelor''s Degree from a college or university and are interested in exploring teaching as a career, we are happy to discuss options to help you obtain a teaching license qualifying you to become a teacher and start a new rewarding career.
Faribault Public Schools is a rural Pre-K through Adult School District located about 50 miles south of the Twin-Cities. The school district currently serves approximately 3,700 students in Faribault and our surrounding areas within our community of 23,000 citizens within the city limits.
